I have seen a few guns (and pics of more) where a dowel or bolt has been inserted through the wrist of a boxlock SxS. Most I saw didn't have cracks so I assume it was to take up play between the stock and the action. What should be the correct way to remove this kind of sloppiness? Would it be to fill the original mounting holes in the stock so there is something "new" for the screws to bight into? Or was this sometimes done just for added strength even if no play existed. Reason I ask is because I may look at an Ithaca (auction sale) that I can see has had a dowel inserted through the wrist. Just curious if the gun would be worth bothering with . I would want to try and tighten the stock the proper way and make the present repair as invisible as possible.
