Sitting in my bear stand Sunday...no bears but had two pine martens run up my tree within 3 feet of me ...had to chase them down ...they were coming closer for a better look...anyone had a similar experience?

When the wildlife starts rifling through your pockets, and stealing your lunch....:D

Had a squirrel do 4 trips past me at about 2 feet range, before it noticed me sitting there. I didn't want the squirrel hollerin' at me and generally makin' a ruckus, so I sat still, and near killed myself, trying not to laugh out loud at the critter trying to figure me out.

Cheers

I had a pine martin climb up the tree I was sitting in several years ago. I too had to give it a scare to get it to buzz off. I'm no expert, but I don't think they are the friendliest critters in the woods.

Actually, those are a sign of a generally healthy forest - it means there is lots of groceries at the lower end of the food chain, which is where the rubber meets the road in the biodiversity sense.

Most members of the weasel family are quite innocuous and friendly. We once had a mink who moved into our trap line cabin and had her litter under the floor boards; she came up three or four times a day to mooch food, which she'd take from your hand. Damn thing was crazy for cheese. You had to keep the cheese locked away, or she'd dig it out and steal it all!

We also had a tame weasel (in an old farmhouse that I once lived in) who'd climb up on the screen door and chirp like hell, demanding to be let in - and who'd then head straight for the fridge, and raise more hell until it got fed! In neither case was any effort made to tame them; they just came around and 'tamed' themselves. Both were utterly clean; never as much as a 'squirt' of weasel stench or any droppings anywhere. As far as I was concerned, they earned their keep by keeping the mice down. They make a cat look like an amateur, as far as mousing goes.

All in all, I wouldn't worry about a marten climbing 'my' tree - I'd just chalk it up to another great outdoors experience.

I would imagine wolverines might be a bit less friendly...*L*..I'd be more nervous if one of them climbed my tree.

I vividly remember as a kid standing near a beaver dam and having a little red weasel come right up to me, bite my shoe, and then run away.

Pine Martens, Fishers, Weasels, Red Fox, Red Squirrels (all too often) SnowShoe Hare,
Prcupines, River Otters & a few Moose have all visited my deer stands. Several deer have conversely visited my moose stands ... and once, a timber wolf within +/- 75 yards. The Red Fox curled up for a sleep upwind ... and stayed there for a good 45 minutes, nose tucked under his tail. The Fisher was hiding parts in a hoolow tree from a day-old gut pile he'd found about 100 yards distant. Only the Weasel gave me concern ... tried to get up my pant-leg. Shook him out when he got as high as my knee !

I had a weasel run over my boot while stalking a whitetail.
My uncle had a trapping cabin in the Yukon and a wolverine got in through the stove pipe and could not get out. He was found the following fall, dead in the corner. He had trashed the place, chewed through cans, destroyed the cupboards etc...
He is now a rug on my uncles wall.

I was duck hunting....had the boat pulled up on shore in the weeds/forest. A fisher came barreling through the woods....sounded like a truck...I thought he was going to jump in the boat with me!!
Got about 5 feet away, saw me and darted up a tree.

had a pine martin try stealing my breakfast out of the frying pan this summer... friend of mine had to beat one back out of his camper when it tried crawling thru the roof vent, took about 4 wacks with a shovel!... tough lil pricks but they make a decent scarf.

Years ago, trapping on the Chin River north of Cochrane, Ont, we had a marten spend the whole winter at our main trapline camp, used to come right in when we were cooking, but mostly it fed on the beaver carcases outside the door. And like tumbelweed says, it sure kept the mice away!

i had a weasle come sit on my lap one time while i was deer huntin he was half white and brown i took a bit of my samich he took a bit then when the run was overi stood up and left and he followed me probly 30 yards so i left him the other half of my one samich
