Hey,

Looking at a 14.5" AR with a pinned brake and was just curious if bringing it to a local gunsmith is all I would need to do to get a different brake installed...

Thanks!

Pins drift....so.........

Often "permanently pinned" flash hiders use a blind pin. Hole doesn't go through. Driven in, no way out.
Pin must be removed by drilling, etc. If there is no desire to salvage the flash hider, it can be cut away, or turned off. Point is to protect the barrel and its threads.
Any competent 'smith should be able to removed the flash hider, but it would be better if he has done the job before.

In my experience, they can be removed, but you will likely do some damage to your threads.

Lots of gradual back and forth turning with a screwdriver through the gills of my brake, and it popped out no problem. I did need to clean up the threads a bit to install my new muzzle device afterwards, and it did minor damage to the brake.

I have not seen one that cannot be removed. Best way is to set it up in a mill and plunge with an end mill where the pin is to within a few thousandths of the major thread diameter. The remainder of the pin will slide or fall out when you tap the side of the brake using gravity as your friend.
Another way is to spin the barrel in the lathe and machine down the OD of the brake where it is threaded on and you will eventually see the pin.

Thanks Casey, it's for potential buy of a BCM EAG from IRG. The brake is on permanently for the barrel length law in the states, and I think it's just the normal A2 birdcage...
