I have a bunch of 30rd AR mags that are pinned poorly - I would like to repin these mags but cannot find that thread with all the measurements :-( Can someone get me some sort of measurement for pinning a 30rd Labelle through one of the "cavern" lines on the side of the mag ?
Much thanks.

I usually pin on the spine. About 37mm down with green followers and 50mm down with brown magpul followers. I use a 1/8" aluminum rivet and file it down so it's reasonably flush with the magazine body.

I've tried pinning AR mags with:
-internal aluminum blockers rivetted through the baseplate
-pinning in the side 'grooves'
-pinning in the spine.
Pinning in the spine is the only one that works and keeps on working.

I had most of mine done recently, I think the gunsmith came up with a good solution, he used a strip of aluminum in the back of the magazine in the spine, to stop the follower from moving, and pinned it in place through the spine of the mag using two rivets. The advantage is that because the strip is blocking the follower, not the pins, you can put the pins further down and not have to worry about them getting caught in the mag well.

Lol, what a bunch of oppressed fools we are. I had to re-pin one of my mags, I used a 1/8" aluminum rivet on the spine as well.

Has anyone tried this method:

Looks to be OK, but it doe not permanently alter the mag body? Is this Legal?

I lost the original thread but this was from this board.

I kinda figured tha this was somewhat problematic.

Ill stick to rivets in te spine (just have to sand them down well)

It is legal because it limits the capacity to 5, and is not easily reversable because you can not remove the floor plate after riviting the bar in place. Should be ok.

The mags are a pain to take apart for cleaning even if they're rivetted through the spine...you can't get the follower and spring out without removing the rivet...

I used the method described with 1/4" flat steel rather than aluminum and once I figured out the finer points I have 13 x30 rd mags converted to 5 rds that work flawlessly with 5 rds apiece. If you want a simple solution stick a pop rivet in the back of the mag that will catch on your mag well. This takes time, a small bench vice, small bench grinder, and a few hand tools, but you won't screw up the body of the mags. TSE has DPMS floor plates available if you need some extra. I found that it works better if you use 2 pop rivets in the base instead of 1. There is no movement in the bar while the mag is employed.

Thats food for thought. Ive had feed problems with 30/5 rounders that dont fit well into the magwel, partly because of the rivet in te spine.

The criminal code regulation actually says:
(5) For the purposes of subsection (4), altering or re-manufacturing a cartridge magazine includes
(a) the indentation of its casing by forging, casting, swaging or impressing;
(b) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a steel or aluminum casing, the insertion and attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or aluminum, as the case may be, or of a similar material, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method; or
(c) in the case of a cartridge magazine with a casing made of a material other than steel or aluminum, the attachment of a plug, sleeve, rod, pin, flange or similar device, made of steel or of a material similar to that of the magazine casing, to the inner surface of its casing by welding, brazing or any other similar method or by applying a permanent adhesive substance, such as a cement or an epoxy or other glue.

This seems to be saying the magazine body has to be modified. I suppose the floorplate could be included in: "case of a cartridge magazine". I doubt somehow the cops are going to be inspecting your mags at the range to check compliance (you never know), however I stuck with the pins through the magazine body idea, because I've got to get them past Customs and I didn't want to risk it.

I don't like pinning the side as the spring gets caught. I like placing the rivet in the spine. I counter sink the hole slightly then use a counter sink rivet. looks good and stays clear of the spring.
