Pinning Magazines

Wow... I really didn't expect this to become such a big issue. This is just a theoretical question. I don't have any AR-15 mags yet and I am looking into obtaining export permits for the magazines in question.

I'm sure it is a lot easier to just buy them in Canada, but getting the specific mags that one wants isn't so easy.

Thanks for all the help, and yes, I intend to stay within the bounds of the law.

Cheers.

All I was trying to do was to make sure the OP understood the law. He is asking questions about pinning mags so it was within reason to assume he may not be sure of the laws with rgards to unpinned mags, and exports. I thought it was a good Idea. I was not jumping to any conclusions. The fact is that yes we do have groups lobbying against us, and I wanted to make sure that they don't have fuel for the fire. My intentions were good, and it is amazing that you guys want to keep arguing with me. Show me where I accused anybody of anything. I simply stated what was the law. You guys are talking nonsense, and trying to make an argument where there isnt one. If you are legit and want to do this than by all means. I have looked into doing it myself, but just not worth the time for me. If you need rare mags then it may be worth it. There were a couple posts here describing using plugs that are not permanent and this is illegal. So there is cause for concern here and I was just trying to help. If you want to continue this argument make sure you can show me where I assumed anything, or accused anyone of anything. So far I haven't stated any mistruths, or accused anyone of anything, just tried to help.

that's a big fish you have mlehtovaara, did you eat it?

Yeah smoked it. Thats all I bother to do with the snakes. strange though there was a bunch of americans from ohio and they were just after pike. We were more than happy that they left us the pickerel. LOL. We were after pickerel as we always are and made off with a couple hundred between the many members of the group.(family trip) We do it every year about 5 hours North of Thunder Bay. Great times. Next year I think Ill be goin for a moose, or a bear, and grouse though.

Yes, very nice fish!

You said I assumed he was breaking the law. But thanks on the fish. My grandfather caught one almost exactly the same size that same trip, just a little fatter. I wish there was still fish like this in Southern Ontario, but it takes a 20 hour drive, or a plane to catch these guys consistently. I don't have the patients to catch 2 fish in a day. Every other cast is the norm where we go. I'd be happy to give you directions.

What happened when the mag pinning law came about? Did people pin them themselves? Are the unpinned mag numbers the same as the unregistered firearm numbers? How is a person supposed to know what mags are for what firearm? For example neither my AIA or my m14 mags are marked and they work in both firearms. This law sucks.

What numbers on the mags are you reffering to? The model of the gun the mag is manufactured is what determines the round capacity. If the mag is made for a pistol it has to be 10 rounds but if that mag works in a rifle then there is no problem you can use it. ex: beretta cx4 storm mags that are labelled cx4 have to be pinned to 5, but if you buy px4 mags or beretta 96d mags that fit you can use them in the cx4. Same goes for ar-15 mags. they have to be pinned to 5 rounds but the L.A.R. pistol mags will fit in the ar-15, and they hold 10 rounds because the original firearm they are for is a pistol.

The numbers I was talking about were compliance numbers, like 7 million or whatever unregistered firearms. My other question was how do I know what gun a mag was made for if it fits in more than 1, if there are no identification marks on it? How does the rcmp decide my AIA mags are not actually puppy killing m14 mags?

I'd be happy to give you directions.

Thanks, but no thanks. I know where to find fish.;)

One way is to use empty brass and the good old Tap method (just like finding a stud). Might take one or two errors, but once you know the measurement it is easy to do on multiple mags.

From what I have heard from gun dealers un-pinned mags are not only Prohibited but cannot be pinned legally.

To have a legal pinned mag, they must be pinned outside of Canada and then imported.

It would be like making a prohibited auto rifle into a semi. Just because it is semi, doesn't mean that it is not prohibited, it just becomes a different class of prohibited.

This is one reason AK Mags are so hard to get, importers are not willing to pin them before importation.

I have had this discussion with Ellwood Epps and Marstar.

If you choose to pin your own mags, realize that you may be treading on the grey side of the law. Once the mag is pinned though, it is hard for anyone to know where it was pinned.

I don't think that is totally right. What do you think happened when this stupid law came into effect, guys had to pin there own mags. Say tommorow your cleaning out the garage and come across an old AR mag that's not pinned. Your not an instant criminal because you have a 30rd mag in your hand. Just pin it ASAP.

...How does the rcmp decide my AIA mags are not actually puppy killing m14 mags?

It would depend on whether there is a little hole on the upper front edge of the magazine.
If there is a hole to engage the M-14 front latch, its a M-14 magazine. If there is no hole, its an AIA magazine.
If its a magazine made for an AIA, and someone thoughtfully added a little hole, it is a prohibited device. Unless it is blocked to 5 rounds. If your unaltered AIA magazine just happens to work in your M-14......
