Pipe tobacco and hunting

Just to get out of the way: I mean pipe tobacco, not euphenium for anything.

Anyway, is it bad to do pipe tobacco while hunting (especially bow)? I mostly go with Erinmore for drugstore stuff, and prefer Dunhill early morning, macBaren vintage Syrian, and may go for Irish flakes.

Depends on the style of hunting you're into. If you are trying to still or stand hunt. It probably won't help you in not getting made by an animal. If you are truck/ATV hunting or hunting over bait, it won't matter. If you are hunting with a bow, I definitely wouldn't be smoking because it really stinks. If you don't get made at a minimum the animal will be super cautious coming into your killzone.

I've heard stories of people smoking Colts and having deer stick their head into the blind out of curiosity.

I guess if they smell some sweet pipe tobacco instead of smelling your BO and breath, then maybe it could work to your advantage. I dunno... It could just as easily frighten them away.

I be inclined to smoke something like black cherry, if I was going to do it. Might see some bears that way, too.

By "Hunting" are we to assume deer?? Deer will smell you regardless of most schemes to avoid scent. So pipe tobacco smoke is not likely to change your chances much. You have to pay attention to your scent cone and the wind anyway. I would not do anything that would alert bear or moose to my scent if stalking them, their sense of smell is even better than deer. You are likely however to spook any big game with all the hand motions involved in smoking. For upland bird hunting, waterfowl, small game, turkeys it makes almost no difference if you can keep hand motions to a minimum or at appropriate times.

I agree with the idea that if they can smell your tobacco, they can smell you. What I don't like about smokers is that you can spot them from a LONG way away by the movement of the smoke itself. Pipes smoke a lot at times and the cloud moving with the wind will be an issue.

I quit smoking tobacco 2 years ago on the 13 of December.
I smoked while I was doing just about everything, and yes, even while hunting.
what's more important is how I was hunting whilst puffin away on those cigarettes.
I generally hunt blacktail deer in mountainous terrain, sitting on my butt, parked on a well worn deer trail waiting to see what comes along.
smoking like a chimney did not hamper my freezer filling abilities one bit. That said, I use the tobacco smoke as a wind indicator and it worked very well.

to each his own but I see no reason to not smoke while hunting if yer lungs can hack it LOL
different hunting situations would obviously be different but smoking was not one of the things that I noticed hampering my success. I won't brag, but as a hunter I've done pretty good over the years.

I think that the best way to go is trying to mask your scents rather than trying to be scent free when hunting big game on the ground. in tree stands I think that you can get away with a lot. One of my co-workers years ago who was a bow hunting freak told me stories of crawling amongst a whitetail group (no weapon) in the middle of the night using "pure Turpentine' (but it has to be pure) like you buy at home depot for thinning paint. I have used it when ground hunting. It's kind of like that Buckleys commercial you see on TV. It smells terrible but it works (the deer cannot smell anything except that sh…t).

I smoke ciggerettes flat out while hunting , i still get them but not the ones around the next corner, a few times id found splay marks from spooked animals, and id just sat down for a smoke..

Hard to say for sure.

I smoke like a chimney well hunting. Play the wind well deer hunting and watch your movment. As far as turkey ducks or anything else smokes make no difference . Dutch

I hunt farmland/bush...lots of feed around, and tractors, chainsaws diesel exhaust all around. Deer don't seem to be bothered. Start a small woodfire, they will feel at home.

Keep the wind in your favor and smoking will not be a problem.
I have always smoked while hunting and never had a problem, in fact I believe it helps mask the human scent.

That's what logic tells me. Would you rather smell like a meat-eating animal, or a burnt plant (with the possible addition of aromatics).

Animals are often curious about smells, but not if it smells like a predator.

Sometimes you can smell a cigarette for many hundreds of metres if wind is right, there is no way one can smell a human at a similiar distance. Don't kid yourself. Now I know lots of guys who have shot a deer while popping cans of beer and smoking, but it's sure not helping your chances. But smoke away, more deer for us ninjas

I like to smoke my pipe out in the bush. There are times throughout the day when I just sit relax and enjoy everything that's going on. It's those times that the pipe comes out for a couple hoots.

I saw what you did there...lmao.
Unless in pipe smoking vernacular 'hoots' mean something different, lol.
Because in my world that means something a tad different.

I quit smoking 50 years ago, but have hunted with many who did smoke.

I am of the opinion that tobacco smoke is not a deterrent to successful hunting.

However,as has been said, if the deer, etc can smell the smoke, they may well be able to smell you as well.

I enjoy a good pipe after the days events for sure, but I think Steve Rinella said it best "To smoke cigarettes in your stand or not. When it comes to questions like that, there's no way to empirically solve it, but I would say I cannot imagine a situation where you would regret having not smoked cigarettes in your stand. But I can picture situations where you would regret having smoked cigarettes in your stand."

I know he talks about cigarettes but I would take it as smoking in general, kind of makes sense I think. That is why I save mine for around the campfire.

I don't smoke any longer but when I did it didn't bother the groundhogs or the deer I'd see waiting to shoot the hogs. However while fishing/fly fishing it helps keep the flies away! I miss the pipe and small cigars now...
