So my buddy and I went and hunted our baits last night and Jay got a real good one. When I got back to the highway an outfitter was pulling up to pull out his "client". Now the thing is we've had a couple of baits down this trail for the past 20 years. Two years ago he see's us pulling a nice chocolate out and the next thing you know he's put a bait in down the trail a couple of hundred yards from the highway. Our baits are a ways in so we have to quad right by the YouAll he's got perched in a stand. Man was he hot when we came out with a good bear! Sh*t happens on hunts, but if I had been them I think I'd have probably come over and checked out the bear and congratulated the successful hunter. Not these guys, just steamed, could hear them giving it to the poor kid guiding. I guess Karma's a b*tch!!! ;)

Couple hundred yards from the highway?
Is shooting this close to the highway legal there?

Some places are designated 300 yds., others are merely on the other side of the ditch. Where our baits are you can sometimes hear the highway traffic if you have a west wind. I don't know how enjoyable it would be for a non resident hunter to be hunting in the Canadian wilderness listening to the constant stream of vehicles on the road!

:needPics: !!!

Where's the pics of your bear!?

Waiting for my buddy to email them to me. Then I'll have to figure out how to get an emailed picture and post it! Got some good video footage as well, he actually had a nice brown phase bear come in first but decided to pass on it. I'll try to get some pics up as soon as I get em'.

This is a major complaint of US hunters, thinking they will be going into a wilderness area, and it turns out they aren't.
Years ago there was a famous guide working out of the Swan Hills area. Demonical probably knows who I am talking about.
He used to take the hunters south, a two day trip with horses and end up on the eastern slopes near the BC border. In the morning a hunter heard a vehicle. He discovered, only a short distance from where they were hunting, a gravelled, all weather road.
Wow. Was he some angry!

Guys from selkirk can do as they wish.

I don't believe the outfit in question is from Selkirk. As for myself my baits are a few kms from the highway and way more work than most people are willing to do to bait bears. Less chance of people screwing with your baits this way and way more peace and quiet.

Same sort of thing happened to us on a moose hunt in Northern Ontario. We had driven into a logged out area and then hiked into a small lake. Surprised the hell out of a group of American hunters who were on a "flyout" moose hunt. They were some pissed off when we explained that the road was less than a mile away from the lake they had paid big bucks to fly into.

Some people just have no Class...
Good for you and dont let it keep you awake at night worry about this SOB.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Well we've put a lot of time and money in over the past 20 years establishing these bait sites. I guess that's why we have multiple bears on these baits. I won't get chased out of there and I guess if enough of his clients complain when we motor past them maybe he'll pack it up and move elsewhere. As a former guide and outfitter I know that I always strived to provide my clients with a quality experience, and if I ran into locals hunting the same area I always deferred to them. Lots of country to hunt if you're willing to do a little work to get at it. I don't need to get into a pissin' match with this outfit or ruin the hunt of some guys that have saved up to go bear hunting in Canada. If this outfitter doesn't have the morals and decency to look elsewhere then I guess I'll continue to wreck his clients hunts.

We've got outfitters that do the same thing with whitetail stands. Stick a baited stand at the beginning of every trail into the bush, then get all huffy when a local or resident dares to pass one of the stands.

It would be nice if there were no conflicts, but as long as people will willing to use your good nature against you there will be.

In my duck hunting area, I'd never seen any other hunters excepting a few other local fellas. This last season, trucks loaded with guides and their hunters were all over the place. They drove over swaths, dug pits and didn't fill them back in, and called the nieghboring farmers so much that the farmer's wives were all pissed off with all the calling. The 1st week of October saw the "no hunting" signs up everywhere. I called the farmer that has given me lots of permission, he said, "Al, the signs aren't for you. The guides are driving us crazy. You can hunt all you want."

I know a lot of guides, and just about all of them are good guys. Some of them (like the guy in my area), need to be clued in a bit.

Great attitude.

What seems to be your problem? You don't like that I live in Selkirk? You take exception that I won't let an outfitter crowd me out of my area? Lots of what seem to be snide remarks but you haven't said anything that I can address! I don't feel I've done anything wrong but if you disagree by all means elaborate.

Either a guide or a troll;)
