The short of it, after many long hours, is my sks mag has a loose follower, the result of which is that it throws the last round out when the 2nd last cycles.

I wouldn't be so pissed off, but I just bought it and of course the guy I got it from said it was a good shooter. Scammed again. I guess I shouldn't complain since I paid $160 with 20 rounds, but I've been seeing these new @ $225 and it's taken me more hours than I care to admit, plus the purchase of 2 snap caps and enough hand cycling to blister my fingers to figure it out.

So the question is, what should I do. Tapco? ak mag? WhereTF am I gonna find a decent mag that I'm not going to pay through the nose for.

Tapco mags are not as good as the factory mag. Nothing is. AK mags only fit SKS-D's and those that have been converted. If you can't find an OE mag from a retailer then apply for access to the EE and it won't take long to find a replacement.

Fix the follower.

There's a fair bit of play at the pin that holds the follower in. I'm guessing the hole in the follower has been worn away. I don't think it's fixable. Mind I don't have much to loose by trying. Knocking out the pin and replacing it with something larger may work.

I have the steel 5/30 Rounders that run great! Literally thousands of rounds with no problems

Thanks for that info. I see those 5/30 in the EE for $55 and at Wolverine Supplies for $60. For the extra $20 over the Tapco and your recommendation I may go that route. Lever does have the original for $25. I could go either way. Probably depends on how much shipping is. May have to pick up a crate to justify it...

Thanks everyone for helping this newb out.

I would try punching out the follower pivot pin and hammering in a new piece of small diameter bar stock. You have nothing to loose.

Just as an aside, I have the 5/30 "USA" metal mag and it works great. From new, it may just need a bit of fitting with a dremel, just as any part would when being assembled at the factory for the first time.

Unfortunately, I have had no luck with the plastic mags fit and feeding , both Tapco and Promag for the SKS's. The metal 5/30 or 5/20's are the only way to go!!!

Following up, I got 2 mags in the post. One a 5/30 and an original 5/10 mag.
The 5/30 I have to admit was a disappointment. The spring was installed upside down, and even when I installed it correctly I couldn't get the follower to come up evenly.
The original 5/10 mag dropped in right away and works like a charm.
So, after too much experience, my vote hands down is for the original mag.
Thanks to all you at CGN for the mountain of help I received.
