I just purchased a new .444 Marlin. I've heard that one can shoot pistol ammo in these rifles for plinking and just plain fun. I can't remember if it was a .44 Mag or what it was. If this is true, I would also want to know that it can be done without danger to myself or damage to my rifle. :) Thanks in advance you nuts. :D

44 Remington
44-40 Win. *
44 W.C.F.

*Hi-Speed Cartridges must not be used in Revolvers. The should be used only in rifles made especially for them.

These cartridges are listed as being interchangeable. Doesn't list .444 Marlin specifically. Take this with a warning. This is not my advice, only what has been published from quite some time ago. There are quite a few interchangeability charts that I wouldn't trust with being safe enough to risk injury. Hope this helps.

You can use the BULLETS made for a pistol, not the CARTRIDGE. Big difference. This is a very common question. A rifle in 444 marlin is made to shoot 444 marlin, I wouldnt shoot anything other then what the rifle was made for.

theoretically yes, but you could never "stretch" a 44 mag case enough to make it fit the 444 chamber- there's just too much room in there- remember , the difference between the specials and the magnums is only 1/8th of an inch, and we're talking INCHES here

On a bit of a side note, and not actually reccomended, I know a guy who used to shoot 44-40 out of his single shot .410 and he swore it was totally fine. I'm not running out to do the same however.

I do know that when I asked that question from the WSS salesperson, he and the customers that were within hearing range looked at me like I was an alien. The sales guy was nice enough to walk me over to the reloading books and we looked for similarities in the .444 and the various .44 pistol bullets. None were found that would make me think that a pistol bullet could be chambered in it. Anyhow, as far as I'm concerned, I'll NEVER do it, I don't need the agravation. Thanks to all of you fellows for helping out though.

OK, you can shoot 44 magnum and 44 special in the .444 Marlin. I did it quite a bit when I had one. They will not feed from the magazine however, at least on the Marlin. I have never had a Win.94 in .444. The cases come out fine, no bulges, cracks etc. The .444 is just a lengthened 44 magnum, which is just a lengthened 44 special.

I have shot 2 1/2" 410 shotshells from a couple of 1895 45-70 Marlins, a 1895 ss and a 1895 LTD1. I used Win. shotshells and they worked fine, Rem. occasionally split a little but still extracted fine. They will not feed from the magazine. I tried some in my 1895 barrel chambered in .450 Alaskan, they stick in the chamber badly.

If you can find them 410 2" shells also work the best, especially if you have a 45-70 with no throat, like the 1886 replica's.
