Pistol and Revolver Accuracy

I would not want to try it these days, but I watched a one off hand shooter with his 5 shot 45/70 revolver.
another fellow had the DA out as well, I just did my wimpy load 38 and a little 357m. DA

I've used a 50 ae a few times. Recoil wasn't that bad. It was such a clunker of a gun that it is awkward. Knew a guy that had a 45-70 Derringer. That was a handle. - dan

No. I am asking people to shoot their Double Action revolvers in "Double Action only", with appropriate loadings, at any range they want. And then, if they wish, they could report back - if they still wish.

"Double Action only" for revolvers means that the trigger finger is always on the trigger in the same position, at all times, and that the grip on the revolver is not broken for thumb cocking each shot, using the support hand (bad) or the firing hand (worse). Two hands shooting - of course. Standing. No bench.

Grab the revolver. Pull the trigger. Bang. Simple.

I have recently started to shoot my revolvers in DA. After shooting only SA for 60 years, it is a bit of a surprise that I can actually hit anything.
On the steel plate range, I can get 5 hits out of 5 shots. 12" targets at 15 yards.

Indoors, I shoot at 10 yards. Even with the 2" snubbies, results are good in double action.

Yes, it is. That pistol has a Crimson Trace grip (laser) which helps, but the other guns shoot almost as well with irons.

For me the practical test of DA is shooting the plates. I now get the same hits with DA as i used to with SA. A steep learning curve. Try it.

^^^I will try. I have a Ruger GP 100 (4") that's a laser beam, but like you 95% of the time I #### the hammer. Time to shake the dust off a few boxes of .38's and make some steel sing.

If you want to learn from the best, pm slavex on this forum and see if you can setup some lessons at the Abbotsford range. You may just leave with the IPSC bug.

Okay Thank You Fellas ! I think I asked this in prior threads to the specific pistols I have but wi ll ask again here .
I have 2 9mm pistols . One 22LR Pistol . Will also be shooting a .357 Magnum. 44 Magnum
#1 At what distance should I begin to shoot pistols ,revolvers 10 yards ?
#2 Then what would be my final 25 yards ?
Should my goal then be to get fist sized groups at 25 ?
So where Is my starting yardage .?

I’m trying to relate this to sighting in a rifle as if I’m doing so for hunting . I like to be 2 1/2 inches high dead centre at 100 yards this then gives me basically a centre shot at 200 yards with the ammunition I shoot !

Hope I’m being clear here

I’m going to take a basic hand gunning course in the near future .

Start small caliber .22 10 yds up to 25 yds. Bench dial the sights in first. Handgun shooting is opposite of rifle. Learn to shoot with both eyes open, focus on front sight lined up in groove with top of rear and let target blur a bit once you have it lined up, focus on that sight just before "squeezing the trigger". This is just basics, every gun will have its own peculiars and the way you set sights, but eventually it will feel natural. Use two hands till you get really good. This is how to shoot a handgun accurately. "shooting fist sized group at 25? LOL!), you will be lucky to even hit the paper for a long time unless you are a natural. Revolvers and pistols feel different so get used to both. It takes time. 1st few years I could not hit a barn door most of the time, now after many many years I can take my Dirty Harry .44 mag or 1911 45 acp and hit 25 yds. in very tight groups and hit the gong at 75 yds.
PS: lately I have been playing around with just point shooting or from the side like in the old movies with small calibers' and amazingly it can actually be quite accurate! with the skill. The stuff you see in some flix with pistols killing the bad guy from 100 yds LOL! pure Hollywood.

This a target from a match shot with a walther Gsp .32 S&w long, likely one of the most accurate pistols. I have shot better targets but not in a match, one badly pulled shot bottom of target. Guess it’s a good reason to practice more duello!

100 yards is doable with pistol. Once you figure the drop you can hit man size target. Or I used to hit a 8inch plate with my Ruger Single Six. Dad had me try with his Glock 35 40cal at 185 yards. Hit the 12inch plate a few times.
