Pistol brass

Why do some makes of pistol brass have a line indented around the case? I have some Fed 9 mm with the ring, and some without. It's a serrated machine made ring about approx. where the bottom of bullet would be.

if the ring is at the bottom of the bullet it is to prevent the bullet from "pushing" into the case under recoil...

It's not a rim. It's a line about right around where the bullets base is.

I have them also. Tomorrow I will ask the guy who reloads mine for me because I also wondered.

it's a cannelure to do what brotherRockeye said, prevents the bullet from seating any deeper into the case which would cause higher pressures.

there is nothing special/required about it when it comes to reloading them.
