I'm thinking about getting something in .45acp or .44mag.

What is available (non-restricted would be a bonus, 18" and not rest. by name?)

HK
Cx4 storm
Hi-point?
Kel-tek?
Ruger PC
AR conversions? I've only seen 9mm.
Marlin Camp

It doesn't have to be a black carbine per say. Pistol mag compatibility would be a huge bonus.

If anyone has positive or negative hands on exp. with any please let me know. Thanks very much.

Ruger PC 9

This is the 9mm Ruger carbine. It is a little heavy and the trigger could use some breaking in, but it is built like a tank and should handle any 9mm ammo around. Unfortunately, it is restricted.

The Storm in .45 is not common and mags are harder to find. The recoil of a .45acp will be fine, in fact .40cal will be harder on it. I have a .40cal version with an Epps installed heavier longer barrel making mine non-restricted. I love it, deadly accurate and cheap to feed, shoots JHP, RN and cast SWC just fine.

Ruger made a neat carbine in 44 Mag. I shot a few dear with it. It had a tubular mag. I loaded Hornady 265 Gr soft points. It would group 1 inch at 100 yards. I sold it to someone that has shoot a deer every year with it!

Regards,
Henry;)

I didn't realize Epps was doing them in .40 S&W.

Colin how much did it run you if you don't mind my asking. How does it compare in terms or weight and ballance to the non-restricted version? You wouldn't think an extra 2" of barrel would add much, but I guess it's a heavier barrel too. Did they give you the restricted barrel back?

the marlin camp guns are pretty neat. Are there many kicking around?

The beretta's are available. I'm not too keen on the looks though. I have lots of ber96 mags though.

Cost was about $475, yes I got the restricted barrel as well. I never had the gun in restricted mode, went from seller straight to Epps.

so far Cx4 with extra coin invested is the only option. Can't have them in 44Mag though. I had one in 9mm and 40SW and now I own non-restricted 357SIG and may (will) have one in 7.62x25 and another in 9x25 Dillon. The whole pistol carbine idea seems like a dead end of evolution - common automatic pistol cartridges (9mm, 40SW and 45ACP) are way to anemic for hunting and not very accurate by design. Storm frame is a bit soft and flex too much to shoot accurarately. Hard to make them shoot uder 2MOA without careful hand loads and heavy barrel, trigger work etc. Rear sight is part of the frame and makes it hard to mount a scope. I recommend getting one in 40SW and rebarrel with non-restricted in 357SIG. 115grain 9mm bullet at 2000fps or 124grainers at 1800fps is closest to hunting performance you can get. If your goal is different and you want heavy subsonic bullets - forget it. All factory ammo will be way supersonic out of 18.5" barrel.

Colin,

all loads I chronied were at least 350fps over published velocities for 4.5" barrel. Take a loading manual, see any load for your caliber and if it says 1250 fps you can expect to have at least 1600 fps (1630-ish more likely) for the same load shot from your Storm. I have higher hopes for 9x25 Dillon, I think stuffed up to the rim with slower powders it may work much better than 357sig. It is out of favour cartridge but may be just what the doctor ordered for pistol caliber carbines. Sorry for hijacking bytheway.
