Hey there,

I'm looking to purchase my first black rifle and I got quite stoaked on the T97NRS. But then my brother put the idea in my head to get a Just Right Carbine in 9mm because of how cheap they are to feed and accessories. Im not sure how I feel about a 9mm because its not that big of a round. I could always just get a sweet looking stock for my ruger 10/22 and be in a similar position for tac matches or tac drills.

for a first non-restricted black rifle what are your suggestions.

The JR is cool, but I can't think of much you could hunt with it, if that is a consideration. A .223 would be more useful. I'm coming around to the idea that rifles should be chambered in rifle calibers...

If you're only hunting paper, then the JR is fun and cheaper to feed.

T97, Mini-14, Kel Tech SU-16 are all under or about a grand and in .223. All NR.

JRC, Sub 2000, and Thureon defense carbine (the TDC is more expensive) in 9mm are all NR as well.

Those are the more inexpensive options I can think of for you. FWIW I went the same way and ended up with a Mini-14 and a TDC in 9mm. Love 'em both and they're both more than accurate enough for the type of shooting I do with them. If you want 2" groups at 400 yards though, get a bolt gun.

I'm in the same boat as you. I really want the t97 but hate the mag release and saftey. And I've heard so many bad things about norinco. Can someone tell me if norinco is really a bad company?

For me, shooting 9mm or 223 are so close in cost (28 cents for 223 vs. 26 cents for 9mm) that I don't see much benefit in the pistol calibre carbine. There may be other benefits, but cost of ammo isn't really one.

Doesn't really matter how bad a company norinco is, they don't make the guns. Chinese state arsenals do. But some are good, some not so much. Ideally handle the particular rifle your getting first.

Norinco is just an exporter, but to answer your question their guns are generally good if you're not intending to sit and look at it all day. If you intend on using it to shoot lead it works 98% as as well as anything else at a fraction of the cost. They tend to cut corners on finish, and "feel" but thats it. They "fit" just fine.

If I wanted a bullpup, I see no reason I wouldn't pick up a t97. I don't use safeties anyway.

Get the 223. If you can find norc 223 1600 round cases the cost is comparable. If you decide to shoot 3 gun you will be at a serious disadvantage with a pcc.

Bahaha, Right on. Ive found some distributors selling 9mm at 19cents a round so the cost could be cut a bit. but still we're talking 6-8 cents for quite a difference in shooting experience. Let alone the fact the 9mm shouldnt be used on deer. I have a full hunting set of guns for the sub MOA groupings. This next purchase will be for plinking and Tac Matches

I used my JR at a CQB match and a couple of 3 gun matches this summer, and I found that I was OK out to about 150m with it. After that the 9mm pretty much starts to rainbow. The only thing I wished it would do is hold open on last round, that slows you down in CQB where you have to empty mags. In 3 gun you can game it and do tactical reloads and not worry about having to cycle the bolt.

That's not "gaming".... lol
That's just proper gun running... 'Never run dry.

In my experience I've found PCC's to be a poor compromise.
what you have is either a really big pistol or an inaccurate, under powered rifle.

I think you're right 100%. I have a 10/22 I might just mod its stock till I can afford a Tavor or XCR in a few years :p

Where are you getting 9mm at 19 cents a round? I want some!

I love my T97: It is a project gun due to bad, evil, men at m14.ca.... They had a 'rail' prototype by the 2nd week of my rifle's arrival to 'home.' They're ba$tards. I want whatever they are making on my gun - as of yesterday.

Honestly, I would start basic. Not cheap, but 'plain.' I prefer not to, knowingly, own junk during my gun's evolution: quality can always be sold. That said, I would probably buy either the t97, Thureon D, or the sub2000 - I have always had a blast with them at their base model. My first pick, is the t97: a mostly 'cheap' rifle that will recieve the most in Canadian cottage industries at this time. Oh, they also get pistol mags+. Cheers!

My choice was to go with the JR carbine over the NR black .223 rifles under $2000. So far it been a fantastic rifle for its intended purpose: Shooting targets up to 100 yards/plinking/looking like something black and evil and most of all having FUN!

It was not bought to hunt big game or go to war......My 9MM version has been completely reliable and has been a total blast.

Just my $0.02
