pistol caliber carbine what is it good for

You have to drop all the high velocity crap that the gun rag writers have been spewing for years, and go back to the days of cowboy logic. Big bullets make bigger holes than small ones, big holes leak the red stuff faster, and the deer may run a few extra yards, so learn to track.
Don't worry about expansion, think penetration, and work hard at picking your shots.
Practice!

So 45 auto is not reload-friendly? Can't I just cast heavier bullets and tweak the load?

It's all about case capacity. Assume all other things are equal (usually not the case/situation). If you had the same pressure in a larger case compared to the same pressure in a smaller case you will get more energy from the larger case. The 45 ACP does not have enough case capacity. Oh sure you can bump things up a bit but then you can also do the same for the 44 Magnum or the 45 Long Colt.

Putting a heavier bullet on will typically reduce case capacity. You can go heavier and max out the OAL but at some point the bigger bullet has to take up more of the available room in the case.

Well I am very very much upset now. Do not even want to thank you fellas. I know you tried your best and kept the sad truth till the last moment. Oh well, so many other guns, all good ones...So 45 auto is not reload-friendly? Can't I just cast heavier bullets and tweak the load? It probably will not cycle then.

Leave me alone here, I need some time to myself...

If it's chambered to any "automatic" caliber it's useless for any real hunting. If it's chambered in a revolver cartridge cook up some warm loads with a hardened lead bullet and have at it. Anything below moose, elk and brown bears are fair game.

Oh, I wouldn't jump up and down and say that. If anyone claims a 357 is a >100yard round, you would almost have to agree a 10mm is also a 100 yard cartridge.

But a 45 auto most certainly is not.

I took a doe with my 44-40 in a 92 Winchester last year, using a 200 grain bullet at 900fps. One shot bang hop, hop, flop.
Distance was 50 feet though.

Just for sake of pure scientific interest I would argue with everybody, on the ground of above mentioned confirmed kill. Check FBI jelatin tests on different loads http://apollo.demigod.org/~zak/firearms/fbi-pistol.php

45 ACP deliver 230 grain bullet at 960 f/sec muzzle velocities out of 4.5" barrel. In a carbine velocity will increase, say 30% which brings us into ~1200 ft/sec. If bolt carried made heavier it could be even higher I would think. 230gr@1200ft/sec is better than 200gr@900 ft/sec. You didn't convince me people.

I am looking at getting the Storm with the non-restricted barrel, ammo cost and magazine avaliabity means either .40cal or 9mm. While the rather hot Fiochi 9mm might be do well in this barrel lenght I suspect the .40cal would gain the most benifit from barrel lenght. Comments?

All I want to hear from you people is that 45 cal is good for moose and buffalo, all other comments will make me very upset. Thanks in advance...

Dude, you have issues...

 Anybody ever tried to make a joke while talking to customs officer? or border guard? I feel the same reading those replies sometimes.

In my experience, people who ask stupid questions rightly get put in their place... But please dont cry. I mean, all of us here do genuinely care about your feelings. Really.

in my case it's the 10 mil auto. i have a TC contender
with a 14 inch barrel. i push a 175 gr SWC at 1500 fps.
i'm planing on getting a 22 inch barrel in the same caliber.
this is the realy good part, straight case,no lube carbide dies, no case lenght trimming, pistol bullets $50 to $60
a 1,000, and a pound of powder is many, many 100s of
loaded rounds. in my case 11 gr of blue dot 1400 fps and
636 rounds per pound. as was mentioned earlier, the early rifles were not that fast , low recoil. with the pending
new regs on both sides of the border on shipping powder
and primers will make everybody wish they could stretch
the powder. Oh! with a Lee auto disc and the powder
through the expander die, makes for real fast loading on
a simple O press.
