I've been a big AR guy for decades, but know shockingly little about pistol caliber carbines. Yes I am searching the forum for info, but I'd still like to hear from you guys and your experiences.

I am looking to pick one up. My requirements:

- non-restricted
- 9mm, .40 or 45 acp
- flat top
- Ability to mount a light, (front rail I guess?)
- Price not an issue

Educate me on whats out there and who sells them. Thanks in advance.

Personally I think the Thureon Defense is has the market in sub $1200 carbines. I say this for a couple of reasons.

1. All metal construction (milled billet aluminium).
2. Tool-less break down. (complete breakdown in under 2 minutes)
3. Great support
4. Simple design
5. Loads of standard AR parts.

My opinion is based on a month or so of research. I bought it myself and created a thread with a review and pictures of all the features.

Super solid gun for around $1100 shipped.

i think the kriss is by far the best choice. thureon defence is a decent choice also depending on preference i personally think it is ugly as sin but it does shoot good

Agreed...

Very strange anyone would think the Kriss is better looking.

I'll start this by saying "The JR is not crappy"... but if you can, you should hold and look over both the JR and Thureon before purchasing.

The Thureon is more money, but once you hold and see it in person I think there will be no questions as to why.

The JR is a good gun and has more features than the Thureon, but those features come at a cost. The manufacturer had to make some trade offs to include those features at an affordable price.

What killed the JR for me, was how difficult it is to breakdown and clean. Damn you gotta take the buffer tube off for break down. The second major strike is the reports of screws loosening after 200 or so rounds.

I will say, you really can't go wrong with either guns though. Both are gonna be a hoot to shoot.

Why Non-Restricted? The Beretta CX4 is your best option for all the other criterion. You can get a used CX4 on the EE sometimes that has had the longer barrel installed and is now non-restricted. Or you could get a new one and get the conversion done. The CX4 has a nifty little rail that slides out under the barrel and is perfect for a light. You can get a CX4 for around $800.00 new plus tax if you look, and the barrel conversion can be had at several placed for around $400.00 to $500.00. There is also talk that Beretta may start selling them with the longer barrel already, so Bob is your uncle then.

Why non restricted? What a silly question. Canada is huge, we want to shoot guns out in the beautiful openness of it. I feel sorry for people who are range only shooters.

The cx4 storm is a nice unit I just wish they would make a stock non res version and yes the Kriss is a oddball looking gun but it is well thought out well balanced and I think it looks good the thureon in my opinion looks like someone took a few blocks of aluminum and built a gun in there garage. It functions well shoots well and is a very strong but IMO it is extremly ugly and it just looks like a square chunk of billet with a barrel attached. So those that like them like them alot and those that don't probably think its ugly :) just opinions

You would hope that for the money asked for these carbines, at least one of these companies would have an engineer with enough pride to create a design that was at least somewhat attractive in appearance. Sadly, that is not the case.

Unfortunately, the truly decent looking carbines are either prohibited by law or prohibitively expensive to own. For affordability and something that doesn't look offensively disturbing, the Beretta CX4 and Hi Point Carbine are (2) choices that come to my mind.
