For my next purchase, am considering a pistol-calibre carbine...a Winchester 94 lever action looks interesting in .357 Magnum...I already reload for revolver in that calibre, so the ammo cost would be well under control. Any other suggestions or pointers to gunshops stocking these? I see Wholesale has them for about $500...thanks!

I have a Win 94 Trapper in 45LC and love it. I can load down for very light recoil plinking or up for a bear stopper/moose rifle.
I looked at the three cals 357, 44 mag, and 45LC. I felt the LC gave me more options. You can use 45ACP cast bullets with ease in the LC.
Light, small and a blast.

I suggest comparing the Winchester and Marlin offerings back to back. Also remember that these rifles tend to ricochet when plinking at gophers and the like, so be aware. Out on the farm, the pistol calibre carbine is a really useful tool and a great deal of entertainment as well. If you intend to use it for deer, keep the distances short.

I was looking for something to add to the locker. Figured I'd get a lever action. I don't hunt big game and I don't reload so I figured I could afford to shoot the 357/38spl alot more than a 44mag or 45lc. I ended up buying a Win 94 in 357. I just want it to plink at the range. So far I've shot about 2 boxes of 38spl through it and about 1 box of 357mag. The recoil of 357 in a rifle is incredibly light. It does seem to be quite a bit smoother cycling the 357mag. When cycling those, its 100% flawless and smooth. The 38spl cycle pretty good but you do get the occasional hiccup where you have to back the lever off a bit and then go forward again. Not alot but certainly not as smooth as the 357. Perhaps that will work itself out after a few hundred rounds...
I have a Browning 92 in .357. Works very smoothly with .357 ammunition, not at all with .38 Spec. unless the cartridges are loaded to .357 oal. I just seat the bullets out one groove. Also have a little H&R single shot I put together from bits. 12ga barrel & forend, plus another set in .357 Max. Have shot it with everything from .38 wadcutters through the .357 Max. I suppose you could hunt anything from rabbits through deer with it.
What does a ruger 44 mag. carbine weigh? As it is awful tough to get a handgun carry permit I thought I might get a ruger carbine .44mag. to sling on my back in bear country. Is it really going to be significantly lighter and handier than a regular shotgun or rifle?

I love the 44 mag. If I was I was NOT going to hunt deer at out to 125 yards I would likely go with the 357 due to ease of loading. But as thats one purpose's of the rifle the other being just a great rifle to shoot I opted for the 44. I bought the Marlin Cowboy 1894. What a great rifle. Either way you will not be dissapointed. Check out leverguns.com. Tonnes of great advice there if a lever is where your headed.
I'm looking for a lever action 16in barrel that definately fired 38spl. Marlin, Win and Puma seem to be my only options. Any further ideas?
I shot a Winchester 44/40 on the weekend. It is surprisingly a heavy round and shoots gently with little recoil. I would not hesitate to hunt with this caliber. However the ammunition is expensive and the brass is too. .44 magnum is the best way to go.
