Pistol carbine's what's the real scoop

I love my JRC 40. Other than being a bit picky wrt ammo and a bit of a pain to clean, I've got no complaints. It is a fun, non-restricted, evil/black 10 rounder, what's not to love :D

I've had a couple of hundred rounds through my JR Carbine 9mm. No problems whatsoever. Its nice and fairly solidly built. But I bought a barrel shroud for it and I might change the quad rail to something longer since you have limited rail space.

But very annoying to break down and clean. I'm thinking about getting a Thureon as well. Does anybody know if there are 10 or more round mags that we can legally use in a Thureon?

There has always been 10 round mags pistol mags for the SA (SMG Mag version) and the GA (Glock mag version) which is currently being sold takes, Glock mags. Very available.

The TD disassembles very much like, and even easier and quicker, than an AR.

the disassembly of the JR has been what has kept me from purchasing one...

it seems that the TD has risers unnecessarily built on to the top though?

The part you refer to of brings the height of the continuous flattop upper rail to standard AR15 height. When holding the rifle and sighting it, you cannot tell it is not an AR15. To the height, if you like the height of an AR15 upper, you already like the height of the Thureon. It takes AR iron sights, and/or any other optic.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

I have a kel tek sub2K 9mil, NR Kriss in 45, and a thueron in 9mil.
I use to have the JR Carbine in 9 mil, but I sold it to a friend of mine.
I bought the Thueron with the idea of keeping the best of the two, between it and the JR carbine. I do not claim to be an expert , but the TD seemed to be the keeper.
Maybe there is not a lot of info posted here on the TD , because they did not have all the teething problems the JR carbine experienced.
It is not difficult to see from the get go that the TD is better designed.
I strongly advice any one thats thinking of buying a carbine to check out the TD before putting your hard earned money down on the JR carbine.
Or am I the only guy that thinks having to remove the butt stock to get to the bolt is ridiculous ??? Or a charging handle that is secured with a bolt and lock washer ??
EMF is a great company and I have no complaints with there support. My experience with the J R carbine was not positive.
I did have on of the early gen 2's , and for what I hear from other members of this form the JR's are running flawlessly now.
But mine did not. How ever my TD did.

The Thureon GA takes Glock mags. Aftermarket availability? What would be the difference between the two? The TD guns take AR: LPK (incl trigger), Pistol Grip, Stock Assembly, sights, optics, all Picatinny mountable accessories. What are you missing for aftermarket?

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure of the availability of the components for te TD or any real results from people who actually own them as i haven't read much about them.
I have to say that what i have read about has been positive. I'm on of those .guys who would rather spend a few bucks more for the customer support when you need it. Sounds like it's a real possibility.
Thanks i may be in touch in the next couple of weeks.
Now I'm just trying to figure out if i should just get a XCR. But the pistol caliber stuff is apealing for the cost of operation if nothing else.

Am I the only one that finds the break down of the JR to be "not bad at all" ???

I have the proper wrench and I bet I can break it down and clean it in half the time it takes to do ANY of my other guns.

I went with a Beretta CX4 Strom.

Cost of Rifle in 45ACp 1,000

Cost to convert it a Dlask Arms $500 Target bull barrel (I bought the better barrel blank costs more)

So right now it costs 1,500 then I put a tricon reflex sight on it for $600.00 so it’s at $2,100

JR Carbine is $900.00 out the door add scope its only $1,500 so its only $600 difference in price.

The downside to the Highpoint rifle is they make a rifle and pistol that uses the same magazines so it's limited to 5 rounds.

I did own a Kel Tec sub 2000 first and I found I hated the rifle it shot ok at best wasn't fun or conferrable to shoot so I sold it.

The JR Carbine I didn't like because they pin the stock which can be easily fixed but it just bugged me.

I went to a local range and tried the Kriss super V and I just didn't like the controls or how it worked I liked the gun just didn't like shooting it. I also looked at the HK rifle in 45ACp and the magazines for that thing was a deal breaker over $200 bucks for 1 magaine and it only came with.

I think it really depends on application, ie: do you want something to take to the range or non-restricted?

If it's range only, you have a variety of kits that convert your handgun into a carbine: Hera, RONI, KPOS and the new Sig ACP.

In terms of 9mm, I think there are really only three NR choices: CX4, JR and TD. I've never handled the TD, but I wasn't a big fan of the JR because of the disassembly method. The CX4 Storm I had was really slick - but it's arguably more money by the time you convert it to NR. I wouldn't push the Kel-Tec or Hi-Point on my worst enemies, and that's all I'll say about those.

If we go up to .45ACP, all I can say is Kriss, Kriss, Kriss. And possibly that rare CX4 Storm in .45ACP that lurketh.

I think the X95 (aka: Tavor Micro) in 9mm would be very sweet. Especially with a NR barrel and shroud. However, that's also most likely going to be pushing the $3k mark (possibly even before optics), and it looks like we'll be limited to proprietary (non-Glock) magazines pinned to 5 rounds.

Yah looking for NR i don't have my RPal and don't plan on getting it anytime soon, so all non restricted for this guy.
I'm definateley tracking a good look at the TD and JR as my two choices. Both seem to be readily available and somewhat better constructed than the Kel Tec which I've shot and hated the feel of it.

I see people asking, so to expound on TD, calibres available, and mags.

The next Canadian TD production, arriving shortly, contains 9mm and .45ACP rifles, non-restricted with 19" Bbls. These are the GA model that takes any Glock mag in their respective calibre. These rifles all have the continuous flattop rail, with three other multi-mount picatinny rails. Price is $1079.

There is also the SA model rifle. These rifles take Uzi type mags. We have sold 5/32 mags and 10 round pistol mags. We are currently only taking SA orders on demand, as TD deals with our GA backorders.

TD designed and manufactured this firearm in house. The company was born of Sunny Hill Manufacturing, if New Holstein, Wisconsin who have been making floorplates and other machined parts for custom rifle builders for about 20 years.

I do hope that shooters deciding on a rifle to purchase have the chance to handle and examine all choices first. If your local gunshop isn't selling Thureon Defense yet, tell them to call us!

Cheers,

Walt

I went out of my way to buy a Thureon Defence and I don't regret it. I paid 1269.00 total. I am so glad I did not get the JR carbine instead. The TD is really well made and is very AR-like. It is light and feels great to shoot. Looks good also with the full top rail and extras side and bottom rail package with octagonal hand guard. Go with a TD.

Great thread. Lots of quality posts and good feedback from those with first hand experience. I want a PCC too, but am going to wait and try to be the guinea pig for a TNW ASR. If an frt number could just be created.... wish it was at least an option to consider at present.

Have you checked the FRT lately?. TNW's website says its available in Canada right now. It looks like a cool little carbine.

Same hear...I found it easy peezy to take down. I also found I cood run at least 500 rounds of 9mm through it before it actually needed cleaning. I used mine for 3gun. Worked very well within 150 yards. Nothing bad to report. It did what it was suppose to.

That's sort of where I was leaning but wanted to be sure. What about the JR vs the Thureon there is only a couple bills between the two. The main concern was the availability of magazines and the aftermarket sector for the Thureon seems well, elusive. Are they still proprietary mags for the Thureon or can you use, say a glock mag.
I'm leaning more and more towards the JR carbine as my choice based on what I read about it.

The Thureon is waaay ahead of the JR's IMHO. Being that the fore-rails and buttstock are industry standard, i have a hard time believing you can't find accessories. That and they take Glock mags sooo...

Also, their service/support is top-notch.

Take down on the JR envolves screws. The TD, push 2 pins and separate the upper from the lower.

My GA 45 is accurate as well. 1 hole groups at 50 yards 2-3 inch at 100 with Hornady ammo.

The OP has had a year and a half to think about it - he's probably already picked one!
