Is an "out-of-the-box" Glock 34 or 35 okay for ESP?

Sure, but why not run a stock Glock in SSP? ESP allows a lot more tweaking and you'll be running against single actions.

What about a Para Tac-Five?

From what I can find online, the Tac-Five will fit in as many as 3 divisions, depending on calibre, mods, and yearly production numbers. If it's a .45 and production is 2000 units a year, you can run it in SSP, ESP, and CDP.

If 9mm and meets production floor, SSP and ESP. You have to run it DA in SSP but may start cocked and locked in ESP.

If 9mm and less than 2k/year are produced, ESP looks to be the only division.

Of course all of this is subject to anything I missed in the rule book or other rulings I'm not aware of. Click here for the IDPA rule book.

Mike Oxlong - Yes

MilDot - Para Tac Five is legal in SSP and ESP. The Tad Five is a DAO 9MM pistol anc cannot run in CDP.

Stevo - The Tac Five is a 9MM DAO pistol. CDP is for .45acp only...I expect you know this.

Thought I covered that with my "if it's a .45" and "if it's a 9mm" in my response. Since I couldn't find the Tac Five isn't on the Para site, I couldn't tell exactly what caliber(s) it was.

Surprisingly enough, I expect I know CDP is for .45's.

Nope, I am a strong novice ;) shooter using a glock 17... gods pistol :)

that being said I also have an unfired Colt XSE in 45 sitting in the safe waiting for some upgrade parts, and a colt combat commander in 9mm so I am not a 1911 hater ;)

just glock has always worked for me :)

One of the criteria for SSP Division and remember this is Stock Service Pistol division us the gun must have at least 2,000 pistols made in one year or for discontinued models a total production of 20,000 units. This Division really is for box stock pistols. Modifications are quite limited. Buy it and shoot it.

The Tac Five is an interesting pistol in that it isn't listed in the 2008 Para catalogue yet Para is producing it in limited runs. For awhile their US division was indicating it was out of production. IF the latter were true and I don't believe it is then the pistol would not be eligible for SSP unless Para made 20,000 units in total.

The gun also comes with a magwell which is OK, as it now stands, as the magwell is a "feature" of the gun and not an "add-on".

So where does that leave us? The Tac Five is legal now in SSP and ESP. IF the rule book were to change to read in SSP Division "excluding guns 'featuring a magwell'" then the gun would be eligible for ESP only. As long as the gun is being produced in quantity then it remains eligible for SSP and ESP.

Owners of the Tac Five will have a division to play in, might not always be in SSP though.

All of this is really about attempting to provide a level inexpensive playing field in each division and a place to play for all the different handguns out there. Not a particularly easy task but one in which IDPA continues to address. Essentially the sport does not want to see an equipment race where one gun or style becomes the must have gun for the division.

I'm just thinking about getting into this and starting some basic info gathering...wow...lot's to think about already just from this thread.

;)

Look guys, do not over think it....

all you need is 3 magazines, Pistol, holster and a double mag pouch.... the holster and mag pouch can even be Paddle Style if you do not want to wear a belt.

frankly a complte 5.11 holseter/magpouch setup is under $100... buy a pistol which usually comes with 2 mags, buy 2 spare mags and your done.

Glock 17 and M&P 9mm are each $599, a CZ75 is not much more.... or a baby eagle 9mm, if you want to go higher end questar has sig 226 for $899 and berettas are not much more.

if you go the glock/M&P route even with a holster your still getting into into the sport for way under $1k.... (The glock 21 holster fits the M&P pistols)

With a used NP22 (Norinco 226 copy) you can get in to IDPA for under $500 if you don't own a handgun already.

Most folks with centrefire handguns have one that will fit in one of the IDPA divisions. Hell, get out that old Smith Model 19 or Ruger GP100 and run in SSR!
