Is a light a "joke" at a non low light pistol course (beg to int level skill)
A light makes sense to me if I was American, but not really as a Canadian. Who trains with a light? A few thoughts rattling in my head are to not bother because:

  • Most, if not all, pistol shooting leagues don't all a mounted light.
  • Canadians aren't allowed to conceal carry
  • Canadians aren't allowed to defend their homes with a firearm
  • Leos aren't allowed pistol mounted light (not 100%)

Not sure of the application

Thoughts????

It's your light. Do what you want with it.
Take it off when taking the course.
Most modern guns come with rails now so if you got the blow, get a light. It's all for sh!ts and giggles anyways!

Agree, it is mostly all for sport and show up here. Pain to have holsters with lights and no lights though!
Thanks for the input

I recently did a level1 handgun course, so indoors, lit, fundamentals based drills. Two guys showed up with lights mounted on them, I chuckled to myself but in the end I didn't care. Their guns, trick them out however they want afaik.

I have lights on maybe 3 pistols at any given time. If I'm shooting a class with one of them, I don't take it off on the grounds that that's ####ing stupid. If I was at a class and somebody was like "uh, there's no low light component, duh" I would not do or say anything cutting in response, because being that stupid is punishment enough. Lots of WML holsters use the light for retention, so what, now I'm supposed to have two holsters, just so some moron doesn't have to make his brain do a single pushup?

Bit of weight on the muzzle can soak up some recoil, not that it makes a big difference to me on most service guns I can think of, but it's still an advantage.

I like having lights on handguns because I like having the option of lighting up a target without removing a hand from the gun, or one-handed while doing something like dialing 911, or holding a kid, or hanging onto a dog, or checking a pulse, or doing a very simple juggling routine.

You want a light on your gun? Get a light on your gun, and ignore people who want you to fit their clearly ill-informed gun fashion sense.

Train as you shoot... The gun handles differently with light. I have lights on most of my guns, I did a advanced pistol course with light on gun. I also have night sights on most my handguns. Do what you want... It's dark a lot

Use a light as you see fit, but your note (highlighted above) - Better check Section 34 and 35 of the Criminal Code.

even better still, take a low light course thru phase line green, having taken various pistol and carbine courses from earl the most informative for me was the low light course, really changed my mind about what i thugh i needed for handheld and weapon mounted light.

and yes, take any and every course using the equipment you would use if it was TEOTWAWKI.....why not, you paid for it.

i have surefure x-200b, x300 and a streamlight tlr-1HL...... the tlr-1hl blows the surefires out of the water, but have not tried a x300 ultra yet..... frankly i have trust issues with streamlight in general, and surefire is my goto light.

The Surefire X300 Ultra, either the original, or the new b model with the X400 mounting setup will be all the pistol light you could ever ask for; make sure you also use the appropriate DG switch with it.

Just one thing you might want to do if training with a light mounted, and putting a lot of rounds downrange during a course, is to smear a very, very thin film of vaseline or lip balm on the lens of the light. It will make cleaning the black crud off the lens afterwards a lot easier.

Regards.

All great replies. Thanks guys.
Was always under the impression we could defend our life and lives of loved ones, but not our homes and property.

Both 100% incorrect

I also train with a light. Its dark 50% of the time, kind of hard to shoot what you cant see

Shawn

My reply above on the defense issue - could you clear that up definitively?

I was not sure on the Leo and pistol mounted light, ive never seen it - perhaps the rapid response teams?

Lots of police forces here have pistol lights on regular patrol. If there's a rail on thr gun they usually have some course to qualify on it. Port moody and delta police here have them on patrol, the RCMP units with sigs have them.

i am to fat to retreat out a window.... hence i resonably cant be expected to retreat, someone breaks into my house "i was scared for my life".

Agree with you, if someone breaks into my home I'm likely in fear of losing my life cause he isn't there for tea and crumpets. The guy I quoted suggested that I was 100% incorrect with my statement not being able to defend property, which is actually correct, but we can defend life

Your 100% wrong no matter which way you look at it.

You need to read the criminal code, specifically sections:

25
26
27
30
34
35

For starters, that is off the top of my head. I am sure there are a few more.

Anyways back on topic, who uses lights!! ;)

I run a light on almost all my guns. I've got an x300 on both my glock 17 & 19 and sig 1911, an inforce APL on my 226, a Surefire m300 mini on my spikes AR, a fenix TK-15 on my old norinco CQA and I think that's it.... As the old saying goes, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

As for those arguing self defence, home defence etc, consider frank costellos quote from the departed. "When your staring at a loaded gun, what's the difference?"
