pistol for 3 gun

Obviously no one here competes seriously.

You need to spend as much money as possible on your gear.
Why?
Shooting competitions are a mind game more than one's ability to hit targets.

You show up with $uper high dollar gear, everyone will be focused on your guns and worrying about how inadequate theirs are vs having a proper stage plan and actually looking at their sights.
You've won before you even take the first shot.

60% of the time, this strategy works every time. Its a fact.

Perhaps this works better to the mind of the person carrying the 4K$ space gun. I could care less what you carry, rather how well you ran through the last stage. I take special satisfaction trying to beat those guys.

Lol! So true!

See. Proof the strategy works!!!
You are focused on trying to beat the guys with the fancy gear. That mental focus could have been put to proper execution of your stage plan.
All the room I need to squeak by and get the win.
Boom.

LOL.

Seriously though, you need to see what type of stages you'll be shooting and the rules that go along with them.
If you can abandon the gun on safe and loaded, a striker fired gun has a small advantage in that there is no manual safety to worry about engaging (or worse yet not engaging and getting DQ'd)

A double stack mag gun has a larger magazine well than a single stack so reloads can potentially be quicker when the adrenaline is pumping. Putting an after market magazine well on the gun will make it even easier.

I currently use a CZ shadow with a CZ custom mag well. Bought the gun used and it has been reliable from day one.
You don't have to spend a lot, but its nice to!

Best advice is to go to a match or two, see what people are using and ask why.
Ask what they would change about it.
Find the gun you think would work best for you and then practice.
The guys winning usually have more rounds down range than the rest of the people at the match combined.

looking for a pistol to shoot in 3 gun one day. there are lots out there just would like to be pointed in the right direction. as we know some are good for 3 gun and some are not just want to know what to look at. looking for a 9mm Thanks for your help

A good question would be, what's your price point?

I'm shopping around myself as I want to get into Action Shooting and I think I've settled on the S&W M&P range kit. Good starting price and you get the holster, extra mags. I really debated that gun and the Glock 17. Both get rave reviews as a fighting gun. I'd suggest going to a store and getting your hands on various guns and see how they feel. Everyone's mitts are different.

Youth is still going to beat you :p

Not yet, they haven't.

My preference is for the ones that go bang everytime when they are suppose to

Absolutely. About the only pistols I see guys have problems with, other than user-induced stuff like failing to seat mags, are 1911s.

I've always shot Glocks. Started with a 19, went to a 17, and now shoot a 17L. If I screw up a stage, it's me, not the gun.

Thats a myth imo....and ive competed with both

One less action that you have to do is an advantage.
As I said, its a small advantage, but its still there.

If you fumble to engage your safety, its time wasted.
If you throw your gun in the bucket the wrong way and the safety comes off, its a huge disadvantage.

Being proficient with your gear will close the gap to the point that if all goes right, there will no time lost, but the possibility of taking longer is still there.

Having said that, I like metal guns and prefer the trigger in my CZ better than the striker guns I've played with.

I don't consider it a disadvantage because the safety is engaged while dumping the pistol. Proficiency is key. I've never had a problem.

If it was an advantage with any discernible benefit, I think you'd see top shooters using striker fired guns. They are looking for fractions of a second everywhere they go and in everything they do.

We're pretty much saying the same thing. I just like the way I'm saying it better.

Top guys have been DQ's for the safety bumping off during aggressive abandonment. Seen it happen first hand.
And there are top guys running glocks.
Jerry M runs an M&P. (sure he gets paid to but that's besides the point...)

All I'm saying is there is one less thing to worry about with a striker gun.

I still prefer to use my CZ or a 2011 though

was at the toy store to day. the CZ has a lot more wight to it over the glock and the walther and S&W. does this wight work for less recoil and better second shoot?? The CZ felt good but so did the clock. what are the prose and cons here. thanks for all the help with this guys at this time going to the range is not a option. as there is no 3 gun and i'm in the middle of a move so you guys are it lol

I have all of the guns that have been talked about here and everyone is right. The M&P 9 range kit s a killer deal and won't hold you back a moment if you practice enough (a bit of a stupid statement as practice will make you better with any gun). The CZ is a fantastic gun and lots of my fellow three gun shooters admit that it represents performance at a great price. All of this being said striker fired guns are very simple to use and won't hold you back one moment or point. Tight budget? M&P 9. Fatter wallet? CZ. Bit of money to burn? STI.

Your pistol is only 33% of the game remember. Personally I think that the shotgun is the most important gun to get right and your AR choice is second. Your pistol is the least expensive firearm to practice with so your choice is less critical.

Enjoy your guns, don't get gear crazy, instead shoot alot. You'll be just fine. It's a fun game.

If I had to carry a good, solid, reliable gun on my hip all day, every day, I'd get a Glock or an M&P (probably will pick up a Shield soon after I move abroad).. For action shooting, I like big hunks of metal like the Shadow because the extra weight absorbs recoil better, making your followup shots faster. It will pay off for the BARELY slower draw literally after 2-3 shots.

A bit of a tangent.. At the last Phull Otto match held at a club where I show up for some IPSC fun from time to time, somebody placed their pistol at my usual spot on the bench, so I left my Shadow elsewhere while I stepped out for a smoke. Going back in, out of habit, I went to the usual spot and as I was picking up the gun the first thing that came to my mind was WTF!!! What's this toy gun in my hand?! then I realized I picked up someone else's Glock, placed it gently back on the bench and went over to my Czech nutcracker
