For the last month or so I’ve been thinking about this same issue that Dammer is (see Female friendly beginner pistol?), in that I’m looking for a pistol that shoots a caliber bigger that .22 but fits the small hands of a 13 year old girl (my daughter). I did have a P22 and sold it to make room in the safe for a Ruger Single Six that I got her last year. But now my daughter wants a pistol and in a bigger caliber. Since I’m not one of the lucky holders of a 12(6), I guess 9mm is the next bigger caliber after .22LR. But what 9mm pistol would be good for the small hands of a 13 year old?

Have her try a revolver. S&W model 14 will shoot 38 Special. Either that or a model 66 (stainless) or a model 19 (blued). Go with a Hogue soft rubber grip.

A revolver is a great way to learn good shooting techniques. You can load light loads at first. Load 4 of the six chambers in a random pattern then close the cylinder. Two of the six will be a dry fire and will show any (or how much) of a flinch is present. Learn proper control and you will be able to shoot almost anything after that better.

Take her to a shop to try a few on for size. You might run into some resistance from shop owners due to her age though. Some of 'em think you need a permit just to touch a handgun. Ask the other members in your club if she can try theirs on for size. A Browning High Power may fit. Or a small frame S&W .38 revolver.

Not that I've ever held one, but apparantly the Glock 19 (available as a non-restricted) has a small grip even though it just looks like a short mag'd G17. If your son likes the feel of the grip, maybe you can find a non-restricted version with a ported barrel - check with Questar.

Correction; available as restricted, not prohibited. ;) I know easy typo to make.

Personally, I say go .38 revolver all the way. Fits small hands, safe, easy transition from the single six, and ultra, ultra low recoil with wadcutter target loads. I've got a Taurus 6" .38 I picked up for a couple hundred for this very task. Recoil type's less disconcerting to new shooters than an auto.

+1 on .38 SPL revolver - less recoil than 9mm, no 'heavy' slide to rack, 'stiff' magazines to load...

IMO 9mm has too much recoil for a 13 year old girl...

And a revolver is simple to shoot. Less mechanical actions that need to go right. Less to go wrong with an inexperienced shooter.
