Find out what fits, from a grip perspective.

It also depends upon the type of shooting she wants to get into.

My "better half" has a Hammerli SP20 RRS in .22lr, a Pardini HP New in .32 Cal, and a 1911 Kimber Eclipse Target in .45 Cal.

The trick with the bullseye pistols, is to get a grip for her and grip for you.

I have had two women go through my pistols, looking for one that felt comfortable. Most were much too big for their hands.

The two center fires that got picked were a Charter Arms 44 spl (shot with mild hand loads) and a Star 380 that looks like a pint-sized 1911.

A Smith M36 with standard grips also worked, but was too heavy in recoail with issue ammo.

If your GF is anything like my GF, the handgun will have to be 1) Nice and 2) accurate...
 
I'll toss another vote in for the M&P 9. Also the CZ SP01 Shadow. I find the CZ a bit gentler on the recoil myself, which might suit her better for a first handgun.

If you're still open to suggestion on the caliber, you can't go wrong with a 1911 in .45 ;) First firearm I ever shot was a Colt 1911 and I had no problems handling it. But then I'm not exactly small and delicate either :p

Let her try out a couple and see which she likes best.
 
If she has small hand go whit some thing whit removable back strap. Personally I recommend HK p2000, I have one and love the little thing.
 
Go shopping with her

Let her feel the grip and weight of popular brands. My sister in law likes her Smith and wesson 9mm and XD-40 for the grip size. So do I, those are both awesome guns.
 
"...Find out what fits, from a grip perspective..." And the pistol itself. Just changing the grips doesn't always make a pistol fit anybody. Take her to a few gun shops to try a few on for size.
 
My teenage daughters and nephew, like the Star Model FR Sport......22 calibre, small grip & lighter than a Ruger Mk II bull barrel.

This cannot compare to a target piece, but at 10 yards novice shooters could care less, as long as they get some results, on a paper target.

X 2 (or 3 or 4.... lots of people recommend a CZ!)

The CZ's are known to have very little recoil in the 9mm versions, such as the SP01 Phantom (synthetic) or Shadow (steel).
You can get safety or decocker models, a variety of sight configurations, something for everyone. And a nice IPSC pistol for you if you get a Shadow!

They also have interchangeable backstraps and ultra thin grip panels for those with smaller hands, such as a woman.... that can make a huge difference in comfort and accuracy.

My girls like a Baby Eagle (CZ clone) because of the weight up front and reasonably sized grip, and also a Browning High Power because it also has small grip. Steyr M9-A1 is nice with mild loads (similar to the M&P) Haven't tried the Beretta yet.

They really prefer lighter loads, especially in lighter guns, much easier to control and they don't worry about the recoil, and given a choice, they will shoot a 22 over a 9mm.
 
Choosing a pistol is a very personal thing. Take my advice and let her try as many as possible before buying one. Choose the one she enjoys shooting most. My daughter prefers revolvers, my wife prefers my Colt .45
