When i owned a pistol in 9mm the girlfriend usedto shoot it, since then I've traded it off on a 1911 in 45 she says the 1911 is too heavy and because the bullets are bigger they scare her lol.

whats a good 9mm that is fairly light and fits nicely in smaller hands?

how light are grand power k100's?

K100 is average I think. Not as light as a 9mm Tokagypt, though! Seriously, you could do far worse than picking a K100. Any of the polymer-frame pistols are probably a good starting place to look.

You're in a better position to judge of course, but if it's an option I would suggest you let her choose her own gun based on the same criteria most of the rest of us use -- basically, whatever she thinks looks cool and feels good!

Get her to fire a couple hundred rounds before she makes up her mind. Recoil is all in the mind. .45ACP while it seems a little more daunting is less snappy than a 9mm or 40S&W, more of a push.

I had a tokarev in 9mm, it was quite light and thats what she used to shoot. Personally I find the recoil of the 45 less sharp and more plesant to shoot.

I plan to take her out and get her to handle a bunch and see which she prefers. I dont know if anyplace in saskatoon will have a k100 to handle though. (the k100 really interests me and the price is right)

It's probably just a matter of letting her pick. She'd probably shoot a heavy ruger in 45 if she liked it and got to choose. women.. :p

I just thought it see what would be some recommendations.

How about a .22 lr?

Mine can handle a Glock 22 .40 cal no problem... but I recently introduced her to a Ruger MkII .22lr and she really enjoys shooting that now, too.

My wife likes the feel of the MKIII .22lr and it's the first handgun she's been able to chamber a round in all on her own. :)

I'd go with something like that (...plus they are super fun!! How fast can you go through 5 magazines?)

:dancingbanana:

Some ideas...my favorite guns for my small hands that also work for my 5' tall wife.

1. STI Ranger II in 9mm, 34oz or so, the slim grips are great.
2. Walther P99, light and with the small grip insert really works well
3. HK P7.
4. Browning Hipower also works but for me the 'rounder' grip makes it torque more

The BHP and ranger ii are lighter than a government model by about 4oz.

My wife tried quite a few pistols, and ended up buying herself an XD9, which she now loves more than me...

Okay, sometimes I lie, but she does like it an awful lot!

My daughters use a Baby Eagle, but also like a Browning HP.

I am getting them a Steyr M9-1A, because of its smaller grip and reasonably short distance to the trigger. The Steyr is also a little heavier than a Glock, dampens recoil just a bit better.

The Tanfoglio Force line of polymer framed guns have extremely small grips and are very comfortable. They're available in 9mm and a variety of other calibers.

My wife is small and doesn't really care for the whole gun thing I'm involved in. But if I was going to convince her to shoot, I would hand her the .22LR Browning first, so there wouldn't be a repeat of what happened 15 yrs ago. Thats when I was shooting at stuff with the 12GA and just gave it to her without warning her about the recoil. It knocked her on her ass and bruised her shoulder and got me a F**K You. Oh well, she still loves me.

Of my lady friends that I have introduced to shooting, I have always started with a 9mm, in Glock, just because they are the only pistols I have. Some of the comments from these brand new shooters like the light weight of the gun, the recoil of the 9mm round is more friendly to them, they all prefer it to a .40S&W or .45GAP, and all have shot better with a 9mm. As brand new shooters with only me as their coach, I've been impressed with how quickly a new shooter can be trained to use a pistol and consistantly hit A's. Some of my smaller female friends do have some problems racking the slides at first, but with some practice they get better.

My wife (5'6") loves my G17 and does quite well with it. One of my taller friends (6'0") can shoot the G22 well but struggles with a G37.

I'd recommend any pistol that your wife finds comfortable in her hand, is light enough and is controlable for her in all operations. 9mm is the way to go.

This may be ###ist but assuming your lady is a girly girl:

- Nothing too heavy (9mm is great)
- Something that looks nice
- Something easy to use (since she is a beginner)
- A gun that will allow her to develop good shooting skills.

My pick? Glock 19 with 109mm barrel. OD frame and NP3'd slide. 17 will be easier to find if it fits her nicely.

If that is too hard to source, a Walther P99 Stainless is a ###y looking gun that has nice features, is accurate and is a lot of fun.
