What are your recommendations for pistol grips for an 870? I've shot a few many years ago and remember that some were more comfortable than others. The local sporting goods stores only carry "butler creek" so I'm interested in what you guys can recommend and where to purchase them (mail-order/on-line).

In all honesty, a pistol grip WITHOUT a stock is next to useless. Unless you have breaching loads, there is really no point.

That being said, I have a Butler Creek one I can sell you cheap... ;)

SpeedFeed makes some nice stocks. I just picked up the IV-s which is the pistol grip with butstock but is shortened down 1'' and has 13'' LOP. Very nice and helps keep the weight my 9lb shotgun balanced.

I was gonna order a Hogue "Tamer" a while back but it was back-order, I ordered the short LOP full stock instead. It looked like a nice piece tho.

The Speedfeed Witness Protection works for me.

The Hogue Tamer has a gell pack where the web of your hand is to take some of the bite, but I think the more vertical style pistolgrips are best used with a matching style pistolgripped foreends in a speargun type configuration.
Tensioned in your arms like a bow...

Here's a few "useless" clips of a pistol grip having fun with target loads:popCorn:

Pistol grips are good for close quarters stuff wiht shot.

I trained myself to use slugs iwht a pistol grip until I decided that it was better to just use a stock...

Knoxx SpecOps!

Gonna try it out tomorrow... I can say I love the feel so far though. I will post in the Knoxx Review Thread with my opinions then.

A pistol grip only may look cool but for anything other than close up security stuff it is pretty useless.
And like RevolverRodger said, it's not real comfortable with magnum slugs or shot.
See if you can't get a combo or folding type.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I know it is difficult just using a pistol grip without the stock. I did take a course in the mid 90's where we did some training using just pistol grips and I remember some grips "bit" more than others..hence the request for your input. I'm a forestry worker and don't want anything bulkier than need be and was looking for the easiest (and most reasonable $) way to convert my hunting shotgun for bear defense if required. The hogue tamer with gel sounds good.

I'd get a SpeedFeed IV-s 13'' LOP and a 14'' DLASK barrel. That should be good for bear defense, in a nice small package.

Pistol grips are very useful when overall length is a consideration. A specialized tool -for special circumstances - requiring practice. Yes, I said it.

Generalizations about discomfort, inaccuracy, and "useless"ness are not accurate and, in my opinion, are based on subjective (in)experience. Full stocked firearms may be easier, and more comfortable, to shoot faster and more accurately, but that cannot discount the value of a specialized tool, such as the shorter shotgun, when another tool won't fit.

Butler Creek, Hogue, TacStar, Choate, Pachmayr and Knoxx are available from Brownells. http://www.brownells.com/Default.aspx

I recommend the Speedfeed, available from AJ Shotgun Accessories. This is Bill Davis' company (as in Davis Speedfeed) and if you call you might even speak to him. http://www.billdavislv.com/

Find out for yourself. And don't let anybody tell you the pistol-gripped shotgun is useless.

IMHO go Knoxx or don't bother.

Personally I'd do one of their a spec op stocks, that way you can adjust the stock to a much shorter length. And you get the pistol grip with the recoil damping system.

Check out the Vids.

Do a search on this board, and several dealers carry the stuff.

IMHO a breachers or grip would only be usefull if your shotgun had a lazer aiming device on the froint...or in it's intended use for breaching doors, etc.
