pistol grip suggestions

Pistol grip

Nice Post Wendell!

You beat me to it.
The responses about being totally useless etc. etc. were off base and in fact.....useless.

The poster was looking for info/subjective experience on different types/makes of pistol grips for his very specific usage.....which seemed well thought out.

Whether he is able to shoot his shottie well/likes it/can hit anything with it can tolerate the recoil etc. wasn't what he was looking for.

I would offer that I would purchase an affordable well made pistol grip for your shotgun and practice with it simulating the anticipated range/target size you expect to deploy it for.
I have a Choate as well as 2 factory Remington and Win pistol grips.
Sturdy/inexpensive/function well.
They are definitely challenging to use well/efficiently. A little practice illustrates the unique point of aim/point of impact issues with them and recoil management techniques.
I went from hitting nothing to making regular hits in less than a box of shells with a bit of practice. I am a seasoned shotgunner.
My brother learned to do the same in an afternoon with a little more practice/playtime and he is a non shooter.

Useless?? I would suggest anything that breathes on this continent closer than 15yds or so has very poor odds of survival against a skilled cool headed defender wielding a properly loaded 12g pistol gripped shotgun.

That being said they render the gun very compact/portable which is what his intended mission is all about as well as also making them easily stowed in non gun like cases so as not to freak out various people who tend to get freaked out by guns. These same people will however likely overlook the gun phobia when it is required though I'm sure!LOL

Yeah I'd rather have my tricked out Zombie blaster at my side when confronting a Kodiak or worse......but would be far more comfortable with the pistol gripped cheapo that was present than the above that was sitting in the safe cause it's too big/expensive to tag along.

It was simply general answers to a general questions.

Your assuming allot about the original posters intentions, and skills. Also at 15 yards one can miss, even with a shotgun, and you will probably only get one shot off against an armed or fang/claw attacker. <--- almost a bear defence thread. :D

"Tricked out Zombie Blaster"? Are you 12 and playing a video game? Do you even know what a Kodiak is? And no it is not the cool pair of boots you saw at the mall.

Well.....

The original poster's intent was clear, compact shotgun for bear defense. No assumptions made.

The original poster's skill or possible lack thereof was taken into consideration which is why I tempered my advice with the piece about practice/test firing before putting it into serious use. No assumptions made.

Am I 12 and playing video games???
Nope.
42, have lived and worked in locations on 3 continents where I was "food" in the foodchain.
Have fought for my country.
Quite certain what the various species of bear are, regardless of how they are spelled.

Hopeful that the original poster finds the solicited advice helpful/useful.
Thanks

You have to practice a lot to get proficient with a pistol grip only.

The Knoxx Comp Stocks are a waste of money, I found that they don't work any better than a straight stock or a Choate PG stock (which is what I use).

How do I know all this - experience.

I've been building combat shotguns for over 25 years.

I passed my shotgun with its comp stock out to at least 30 people to try so far without saying a word to them about the recoil system, and they all commented that it had far less recoil then they expected.

So I really don't know what shotgun you where using, but the comp stock works brilliantly with mine, and I wouldn't own another "combat" shotgun without it.

Calum, I think the comp stock that RePete is talking about is different from your Spec-ops version.
It looks like a traditional stock with no pistolgrip and only absorbs recoil through a spring set up in a linear fashion.
The Spec Op version has two recoil absorbing systems that work together.

RePete, Have you tried any of the newer Knoxx products?

Also there is a non-spring version that is simply an adjustable stock. Unfortunately their choice in marketing can be confusing.

Remington 870, and it was the SpecOps.

The stock I used was purchased in December '06.

Definately not impressed.

FWIW the Breachers grip is a SpecOps without the stock.
