Pistol Grip Technique

Recently I purchased my very first polymer pistol, an XDM 9mm. I'm a 1911 guy and I haven't owned much that isn't a 1911 but now I wanted to try something new.
I have one problem. I'm right handed and I don't know where to put my right thumb. On a 1911, my thumb rides the safety. Otherwise, I bump it up and jam the gun. On the XD, if my thumb is high, it prevents slide lock and if I try to hold it low, it's awkward for my left hand and my trigger finger contacts my thumb during the trigger pull. I have long fingers.
How do you guys hold your pistol?

Skoal is right. It’s the only way to shoot guns like the XDM, Glocks and SIG P series right handed if you have a long thumb.
I have the same issues as you with Glocks. The right over left thumb technique is the only way to be sure you don’t ride the slide stop and prevent a slide lock on empty.
I find it awkward also. My right thumb always ends up flush with the slide stop and I just tap/ rack, reload/ rack when I click on empty. A lot slower but I just live with it. I need to work on what Skoal recommended.
