Pistol grip undercuts (with pic!)

Just thought I'd get a discussion going about pistol grip undercuts.

Myself, I prefer the maximum undercut possible on a pistol grip, thus allowing my hand to ride up as high as possible. This givers me better control for aiming and shock absorbtion after each shot.

Below is a picture of my Dlask 1911 Custom .45 - it has a maximized undercut. I also own a Dan Wesson bobtail .45 whose undercut is less pronounced, but still good enough for me.

Strangely, my friend recently bought a Dan Wesson Pointman 7 .45 and it has virtually no, if any, undercut at all. Visually, this gun is very similar to my Dlask, but the lack of undercut radically changes the whole experience for me - to the point that I would not buy a Pointmant 7 for that reason. I have a large hand and it is forced to the very bottom of the handle, so much so that my little finger is halfway sliding off.

THE POINT OF THE STORY is that you take a big risk buying a pistol that you have not had the chance to, at bare minimum, hold in your hand, let alone shoot. My buddy bought the Pointman 7 off the internet without ever having held one. He likes it - he got lucky. I must confess that I bought my Dan Wesson bobtail .45 last year without ever having held one - and I got lucky too... (a gun magazine reviewer with large hands said the gun fit him perfectly)... but I'm never taking that chance again.

Let's hear what you all have to say on this subject! Personal prefereces, stories etc.

It just me, I believe a shooter should learn to deal with all design. I have a xxs small hand and is not able to find a small gun with a super slim grip. so I have to deal with those 2x4 and so far have no problem.

I have 2 beavertail Colt 45's, and I like the one the the bigger undercut better, yes.
But I can't seriously imagine it affecting my groups. I certainly wouldn't go uppercase about it.
If you are in some kind of competition where it would make a difference, you would have a customized gun to suit, yup. Otherwise you would adjust.

Every time one of you guys posts a pic of their Dlask 1911 I get this wierd urge to sell everything I have and get one (but don't quit posting on my account). As far as the undercut goes, I think it's one of the reasons people tend to like shooting some of the newer designs, and complain about the 1911. That undercut (which appears on almost all newer designs) not only increases accuracy but improves comfort and speed between shots

I'm a big believer in undercuts

I thought that the STI Ranger II felt good, and it does, but not quite as good as does this:

Now that is a nice-feeling pistol!

What are we talking here "triggerguard undercuts" or "pistol grip undercuts"? Could someone please post before and after pics (10X12 glossy colour photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one) so that I can figure out what you are talking about?

Thanks

in the above pic of the Colt Commander, the undercut is where the trigger guard meets the frame just underneath the mag release. The area is machined away to get a higher grip.

Hmm..The Steyr MA1 don't have a deep " undercut" but the hand sit very very high, I however think it is the over all design of the gun instead of that undercut, Some do believe that undercut is to avoid the trigger guide rub your middle finger.

Ya Baby....so you know Alice too:dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Ya Man.... me and Alice go way back. I'm sure there are a lot of young GN'ers on this forum that have no idea what we are goin on about. So before we end up on the "Group W bench" we had best get back on topic.

One last comment before I go and "Run Thru the Jungle".

"I'm sittin here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug."... You gotta love it.

Me thinks this whole issue of "undercuts" on the front strap of the grip is still not as important as to how close the web of your hand is in relation to the travel of the slide on the back strap..... ;)
