Pistol Grip - Yay or Nay?

Ask yourself this question.

If you are down on the ground being "chawed upon" by a bear would you rather have your Buddy armed with a pistol grip defender type gun that he cant shoot for ####e and loaded with buckshot or a regular stocked short barrel 12 gauge loaded with slugs?

Orrrr....

If you actually have to stop a charge at close range do you want to be Hollywood from the hip or actually get it done with a regular stocked gun shooting from the shoulder?

Most guys I've asked to shoot their pistol grip defenders at moving targets cant hit a 5 gallon pail moving in at 10 yards with 00 buck from the hip.
 
Slightly less accurate? Under stress? Possibly in low light? Good luck hitting anything like that without a lot of practice.

If you want both worlds get a folder. I agree that without a great deal of practice there is nothing as usless as a shotgun without a stock.

the pistol grip would allow slightly faster target aquisition, but would be slightly less accurate fired from the hip.

You can aim a shotgun with a pistol grip the same as you can aim a shotgun with a stock so how is it less accurate?

Because I am right handed and left eye dominant I can shoot a pistol grip much more accuaratly than I can shoot one with a stock. With a stock I have to either shoot left handed or aim with my weak eye.

2.) Have you ever aimed a pistol gripped shotgun.

Well I must be a very, very weak Joe, because a 3 inch magnum slug out of a 12 gauge shotgun will rock me pretty good. And I know for a fact there's no way I could control one, aimed, with one hand yet. And because every shotgun I've ever fired has come straight back, I know it would knock my teeth out. But I would love video footage of seeing you do this. :)

with a bead sight-pistol grip you dont need to hold it as close to your face as you would with a standard stock

and if you cant control the recoil you need to do more :jerkit: to toughen up those arms :p i kid..


3" could be burtal but 2 3/4" are well controllable

I'll buy the first beer for the guy who tapes himself aiming a pistol gripped shotgun loaded with 2 3/4 in, 1 1/4 ounce slugs. Real life "I'm about to get my face eaten off by a bear" shooting, not bracing yourself, shotgun at arms length kind of thing. Just like you would naturally throw a gun to your shoulder and fire. I'd like to see it again. ;)
 
I did some buck and slug shooting a while back with my friend's 870 with the stock folded and never found it particularily upsetting, and I was like all of 130 lbs and coming off a long period of illness at the time. I shot it at about 3/4 looking down the sights, I couldn't hit a damn thing with it at chest level let alone from the hip. Using the sights I could get it done but never as fast or as accurately as a shoulder stock.

After 30 or 40 rounds I didn't have any pain immediately or the next day, but I'd worry about elbow and wrist problems over the long term if I had to practice enough to be life-on-the-line proficient with a PGO setup.

1.)yes,and would take a stocked one over a pistol grip or folder any day, But ,Damn,they look so cool with pistol grip only.

2.)yes,good luck hitting anything beyond 12' feet with 00 Buck,and quick follow up shots,Ha,ha,ha,ha. Oh,yeah slugs,well,maybe you shold get something you can put a bayonet on so it'll hold the muzzel in place while you take your shot.:p

3.)no,but that was from a fight in high school.

Out walking the dog where you might be charged from far off, full stock. In camp, pistol grip. If you can't hit at close range from the hip practice. Its a ton of fun to go out in the bush and just blow stuff up. I've been blasting off a bunch of old Mag. lead rounds through my Deffender. With practice you can unload 8 in the blink of an eye. You will also need a heat shield to strike fear into the Bear. Side saddles are good too, once the bear sees that he'll know he's in trouble.
