Pistol length 180 gas system

Does a short gas piston exist? If not, are the two grooves on the end of the common piston functional, ie possibly for dissipating gas? Wondering how much of a job it would be to build a shorty style range rifle

The current carbine length system should be good for down to a 10-10.5" long barrel. How short do you want to go?

I'm curious to hear what you do as I had thought of making a .300Blk upper and the barrels are all pistol length.
