I have owned:
- Colt 70 Model 1911
- HK USP 45acp
- several Walther p38s
- Steyr GB
- Lahti L35
- Steyr M9 9mm
- Glock 9mm
- 2 HK P7 PSP's
- Benelli B76 (which I wish I never sold)

I've sold all of these as my handgun range was too far, but I plan to start shooting again. I'm leaning towards a Glock 22. It will mostly be for recreational shooting, with possibly some intent for IPSC. Not sure if i will reload, as I sold my progressive press ..... is 40 SW more available now than 9mm?

I'm trying to keep the price of the pistol around 600.....used.....any thoughts or recommendations (also half considering a BHP)....

You will probably find that 9mm ammo is 'cheaper' to acquire than .40 S&W... although a Glock 22 is a good pistol and the .40 S&W is a great all round ctg IMHO.... but a pistol in 9mm would serve you well, too.

Can't believe I just wrote that...

norc 1911A1.
get armco to tune it, replace the springs with wolff springs (found the norc recoil spring a bit soft, so i put a wolff 16lb one in, much better)
buy some extra mags and you still have beer money.

you just have to start handloading. you can load .45acp for alot less than the cost of factory 9mm if you use cast bullets. (armco can hook you up with those to)

just my two cents.

SIG P229 (Best handgun I've ever owned) - Dead simple in design and very high quality; it can be stripped down to every part easily (no staked parts or parts that aren't supposed to be removed - the rear sights don't need to be removed to mess around with pin-safeties) - They're just solid, well constructed pieces. Can't beat 'em!

Otherwise Glock 22 for a good .40S&W on the cheap :)

This guy went from HK, walther, Benelli and Styer and some people have suggested a "NO-rinco"?
yikes.

I suggest Sigs, Walther P99's, Beretta's and if you must.. a Glock.
My opinion of Glock is that they are the Volkswagen of pistols though....
Yes I have one.. so shut up.

As far as reloading:
9mm will cost you about $5 per 50 and .40 will cost you about $7 per 50.

I think I may have a solution for you...

Hi Rob,

Unless there is a good reason in your mind to go with a .40, I think a 9mm is a better choice all around. The ammunition is still somewhat cheaper, and it's perhaps a little easier to "hit" with. If you decide you are looking for a BHP (an excellent choice) then let me know and I'll try to talk you into buying a sweetheart of a gun that I have available. ;)

Best wishes, Jeff.

What about a Sig 220? Any thoughts? (referring to the refurbed Euro heel release ones)

My Sig P220 was the most accurate .45 I've ever shot. A few years ago there were lots of cheap, NIB 9mm versions but they are hard to find now.

.45acp ammo is now $21-$25 a box if you can even get it around here.

If you are or were military/LEO (or can get someone who has those credentials) talk to police ordanance for a new g22 or g17 for $635 plus tax. That way if you don't like it or want something different you can trade a new gen glock with night sights for whatever else you may want.

If you get at all serious about IPSC, here are some factors to consider:

- You will be shooting a LOT of rounds in practice and competition, compared to casual plinking or bullseye.
- If you shoot in standard division (basically single-action semi-auto), shooting .40 or .45 gives a slight point advantage over 9mm. If you shoot in production (basically double-action for argument's sake) it doesn't matter and 9mm is fine.
- Between .40 and .45, .40 is cheaper and brass is much more available for reloading. Single-stack .45 magazines are also more difficult to do magazine changes with than a double-stack magazine.
- A heel magazine release is going to be frustrating and slow you down in magazine changes, since you can't drop the mag with the gun hand while reaching for a new mag with the other hand.

Not to say you can't ignore all of this and still have fun playing IPSC, but these things can reduce frustration and costs. Just saying...

I shoot .45 with single-stack magazines. But I'm at the stage where I want/need to change that.

Rob,

The P220's in 9mm have always appealed to me as a nice gun to own...I had a .45 Auto P220, and it felt great in the hand as it was a single stack like the 9mm ones are.

Jeff.
