Pistol powder in rifles.

I am wondering if its possible to load a 308 winchester with pistol powder for alight target load. I was thinking around a 38 special loading. Can this be done safely?

use IMR 4759 for reduced .308 load, use 21-26 grains depending on your
bullet and headroom.

Don't experiment, use what is published.

the lyman book used to have reduced load selections, esp for use with cast bullets

This is common for cast bullet loads - is this what you mean?
For light jacketed loads, usually a slightly faster than normal rifle powder is used.

Its for a cast bullet 150 grain lee mould with a gas check.

The Lee and Nosler manuals have reduced loads listed. I believe most of them do use pistol or really fast rifle powders.
