New to pistol reloading and was looking for some recommendations on powder. Looking to pick up a few different types to try out and was looking for a place to start. Specifically looking for powder geared towards 45ACP and 44 Rem Mag(lever action not pistol). What has worked well for you guys and is generally easily avalable? Thanks.
 
I use Unique in both of those calibers. Titegroup would probably work in both as well. Both should be easy to find. Get a reloading manual and have fun.

I have the Speer, Barnes, Nosler and the Lee reloading books. Just wondering what works well for guys and what seems to be more common. From what I've heard Unique seems to be fairly common, I havn't heard of tightgroups, I'll have to look it up. Thanks.
 
Titegroup seems to be the way to go, I will have to keep my eyes open for it. Picked up some Hornady 44cal 300 grn XTP's going to try them as a hunting bullet over some 2400. Might pick up some Berry's and see if I can find some titegroup for a plinking load. Not sure what I am going to use in the 45 yet. Thanks for all the info guys. "tight groups" everyone
 
Unique would be my first choice.

I have used TG in the past and it is more than up to the task. The only downsides to TG that I found was it was very smoky at lower pressures. You almost have to load it at max to get good performance. add to that the high density and I eventually stopped using it. I personally have managed to seat a bullet over a triple charge in 44mag..... It was in an experiment, I did it on purpose so there was no danger of blowing something up. But......

I pretty much use unique for everything, in 99.9% of the things I load it in a double charge spills out of the case and a regular charge is visible in the casemouth without any funky lighting......

Tight group and Unique are my go to powders. I would stay away from tightgroup for your listed uses due to case sizes, its very easy to souble charge with it in a larger case without noticing. You may also look at blue dot for the 44 mag
 
For your rifle to be loaded at full power, your 2400 is an excellent choice.

Titegroup makes excellent target ammo, but as everyone has said, it can be double charged and still not be noticed.

Unique is an old standby powder. It is a flake powder and binds up in some throwers. A powder i sue instead of Unique is IMR SR7625. It is about the same speed as Unique and is quite bulky. It meters beautifully and can be used for mild to medium hot loads.

It is the most accurate powder I have found for my 45 ACP. 200 lead SWC and 6.0 gr. Full power is 7.0 and 7.5 is super accurate in my 625 revolver.

For my 44 mag revolver, 6.0 gr under a 240 SWC is very good. 10 gr gives a nice thumper load.
 
Power Pistol is my powder of choice for 9mm, .40 and .45ACP also used it for .44mag before.

My .45 load is 7.5gr behind 200gr plated FP bullet. Enjoy the muzzle flash ;)
 
I'd have to agree with the above posts, for full house loads for the 44 mag H110 is my go to powder followed by 2400. But for fun Unique works very well in both 44 mag and 45 acp. And as others have said just be careful with the fast powders
 
Double charges are something that I never really thought of. With all my rifles a double charge results in an overflow. Will really have to be aware of that. Thanks again guys.
