Can anyone tell me why pistols seem so much more to make or at least to buy than a rifle? Also why do some pistols that are similar seem to have a huge price difference? Does it really cost that much or do they charge more because they are considered more "dangerous"? These ? may seem stupid but just enlighten me.:)
 
Quality, Manufacturers rep, fit and finish, reliabilty, cost to deliver, cost to manufacture, number of moving parts, durability, cool factor, supply/demand....you know, the things that make the difference in prices in most any other apple to apple situation. Think Mastercraft, Snap on and Sears, or Lucky, Moosehead, Canadian and Corona. (OK, perhaps that last analogy is less likely to apply, as we all know damn well that it's the government that regulates pricing on alcohol...and they fill their coffers given any opportunity they see fit to create.)

Pretty straight forward IMHO.
 
"...have a huge price difference..." A lot comes from where a particular pistol is made. The manufacturing cost has little to do with it. European pistols tend to cost more because of the preception that they are somehow better. That's mostly marketing with a lot of supply and demand thrown in. Plus duty, taxes and shipping.
Danger has nothing to do with it. Firearms can't be 'dangerous'. They're inanimate objects.

You're not basing all this on the pricing at the fishing store with the gun closet are you? Check around, you can usually beat their prices on the EE here or by mail order.... ;):D

No I am not, but you get points for being keen;) I have always been treated pretty fair at the closet because I buy so many. They are expanding...Dec,1:D
 
Given the fact that the shooting community on the South Island is growing very quickly they're going to have to expand that side of the business. Now if our stores could only get stock...
 
When I was looking at 1911a, I was suprised at the difference in price on a gun that has no patent restrictions. This probably deserves a thread on its own.

I look at the price of a good bolt action rifle and ask "why are these so expensive. Not even half the number of parts in a good handgun".

What kind of guns are you comparing. If I compared a Semi-auto handgun to an AR type rifle the rifles are more expensive.

I am comparing hunting rifles to pistols.
