Pistol Red Dot - What size dot?

For those who run a red dot on their pistols, what moa size dot do you prefer? Thinking of grabbing a holosun 407c and there's a good deal on a 2moa version but I'm wondering if that dot is too small to run on a pistol? I currently run irons on all my pistols.

Most info I read online is all about defensive carry you want 6moa so you can find the dot faster. Seeing as we are range toy only in the free state of Canada, what do you recommend?
 
Im running the 2 MOA on my 407's . Its bright enough that I can pick it up well, are you shooting paper or steel plates?
If your looking for group size go with the 2 moa dot , itll be a bit more precise at longer distances .
If your not in a hurry to shoot might as well have a finer dot too work with.
 
If you want to play an action game like IPSC or IDPA, most people are happy with a bigger dot. I use a 6 MOA.

If it’s slow fire, then small will be fine. You’ll have time to see it from shot to shot.
 
Unfortunately, I don't agree with Jimbo on this one. I have been shooting IPSC for a while now and started with a 6.5 MOA RMR. Thought it was awesome, but only up close. When you're back 10 - 20 yards, the dot begins to cover the entire A section so you're not sure where you're hitting. I have been using the 2.5 MOA SRO on both my Production Optics and Open Division pistols for the last few years and find that if I need a bigger dot, I turn up the brightness a little and voila - got a bigger dot. The smaller dot doesn't cover up the entire target or the A section of the target at distance.

The SRO sure is nice. A friend has the same 2.5

At 10 yards, I can hit any 1” target on paper with the 6MOA dot. I literally practice aiming for pasters or bullet holes when doing slow fire, to see how tight I can shoot.

One match had us shooting 40 yard targets and hitting Alphas was just fine with a 6MOA dot. A 6 MOA dot is about 6” at 100 yards, or 3” at 50 yards. The A-zone is 6” wide max, so I don’t know what your dot was doing blurring out so far at 20 yds. Maybe it was faulty?

We all see the dot a little differently though. My 6MOA dot blurs out a bit and I see it wider than it is. YMMV

Edit to add: Eric Grauffel uses a 6MOA dot and it clearly isn’t hurting his accuracy. :cheers:

Another option is the Holosun 507 with the ACSS chevron. Very happy with the two I have.


If it is a dot, I'm partial to the 2 moa. Easy to turn them down for non-timed slow fire practice and turning them way up so they don't wash out during a match while still keeping some precision.

I have a 2.5MOA Deltapoint on a Walther PDP and a 3.0MOA Holosun on a CZ 75 SP01 Shadow. Because the distances I shoot can vary between say 7 yards and 25-30 or more I like the smaller dots.

This is both bench shooting and run and gun style

My issue is bad astigmatism and blurring and/or multiple dots..... you get used to it. A bigger dot would be even worse for me I'm guessing.

Warrior Poet says use the smallest your eyes can see He actually recommended 3.5 MOA. I got 3 moa for my Glock and my Ruger PCC and am happy with them. Perhaps if there are people using red dot and let you you can try some at the range you will find what suits you.

I don't use it now, but have a 6mm Vortex, use to be on a 1911 45, before I sold the gun.
it was a slide mount, with a plate in place of rear sight.
it worked great ,on steel it was fine, But for bullseye I found the dot too large, If you turned the brightness down it was OK.
I would go 2 or 3mm if I was doing it again.
I had a no name cheap 2mm and it was good , but never used it before I sold it, would have been good on a 22 rifle for closer shooting,
thou I think for a rifle, just use a good scope.

I still have the 1911 mount Vortex and a s-w revolver scope mount that has me thinking, but on a short barrel it will look stupid.
I don't think I would shoot it any better .

Depends a bit on what you are planning to use it for. I put a Holosun 507COMP on my Canik Rival a while back and it is awesome. Had tried the 507C which is also nice but the COMP is outstanding. Also run a couple of Vortex Venoms (3MOA), they are also good but I am tempted to upgrade at least one of them to the COMP.
