I am having a tough time getting magazines for my XD45ACP. I am down in the US working until early January. Is it possible for me to buy 10 round mags here and bring them back? I am sure they would be cheaper and in plentiful supply.

According to Brownell's, 10-round magazines are classified as "high capacity" by the U.S. federal government under the new Patriot Act stuff and are banned for export. At least that's what happened to me when I tried to order some for my .45. They would probably be seized at the border if you were caught coming across with them.
10 Round mags are not prohibited and Customs doesn't care as long as you declare them upon entry and pay the duties and taxes. If you are in the States you can buy them in person although unless you are in a State like NY they would probably not stock 10 round mags.
CeeZer.... Customs despite popular myth does not "hold" goods unless they are seized or sent for determination (ie mags that appear to hold more than 10 or are poorly converted high caps). If it took a long time for your order to arrive it's more likely a shipper or Can. Post delay.

I had the same frustration as you looking for mags for my XD45...Nobody had any, gunshops in edmonton wanted $49 each and 6-8 week wait. Solast week I ordered 3-mags for $20 bucks each, an eotech scopecoat, and a glock t-shirt,,,all for only $114 including shipping and insurance from (remove spaces)

I have purchased mags in person on more than one occasion in the U.S. with no problems. The only documents requested of me in the U.S. was my pal. In regards to returning to Canada, as long as the magazine is 10rnd (handgun) and declared there would be no problems bringing it back.
On another note, I was refused sale of ammunition by some firearms dealers in the states with reason of being a non-resident. The dealer in question suggested I obtain a small game licence for anywhere in the united states and he said he would then legally be able to sell me as much ammunition as I wanted, weather this is enforced in all states I am not sure, this was in New York state. (happened twice)
P.S. A Canadian is allowed to bring back 5000 rnd's ammunition, no exploding ammunition or flechets, only restrictions (must be declared) (yes hollow points are NOT prohibited)

To purchace and/or possess ammo in the US you MUST have a hunting license from anywhere in the US.
You can only export ammo if you have a US EXPORT PERMIT, otherwise be prepared to loose your ammo, car, and ability to enter the US. Canada import doesn't care.

that makes sense then because I have brought back around 3000 rounds and have had no problems what so ever, only had to pay the tax on them, but if it is a U.S. export legality then only random export checks would pose problems, Thanks for the post

It is LEGAL (for Canada) to bring up to 5000rds to Canada BUT it is ILLEGAL to export ammo from USA without FFL. DO NOT try it again as you are breaking US law!!!
In WA they don't care if you have hunting license or not and will sell you ammo the rest is up to you and you are likely to break US law. As far as hunting license goes, one can buy Alaska small game one for $20 and instantly print and sign it to make it valid while the real yellow one comes in mail in a week or so.
It would be legal to buy AND bring ammo from US only if you have ATF6 form and even then you are legally allowed as well as required to take home as many rounds as you brought into US.
