Pistols of the OPP

When I started in 1982 I was issued with a Smith & Wesson Model 10 with a heavy 4" barrel in .38 spl. That was the service revolver before we went to the Sig Sauer P229 pistol in .40 S&W in 1994.

From the early 80s until the switch to the SIG 229, some OPP V.I.P. security teams were issued the H&K P7. The TRU team was also issued a customized Browning Hi-Power at one point.

Drug Enforcement Officers also carried H&K's and K-9 Handlers carried HP's. I think that the special services were the proving grounds for semi-automatic pistols. I remember a senior officer telling me around 1992 that I would not see pistols issued in my career. Now I have been carrying one for twenty years.

Aha! That answers a question I've puzzled over for quite some time. When the Pope came to Canada I had occasion to observe at least one plainclothes officer with an Hk P7 in a holster in the small of his back. I always assumed he was RCMP. But in fact, I guess he was OPP.

P229 40 S&W and DAK with a special heavy trigger made just for them by Sig Sauer USA.
X5 Tactical in 9mm for the Special Troops, single action only. One of, if not the only, Units in Canada that issue and use SAO.
Replaced the Browning HP's. Highly Trained guys, and they shoot them very well.

Sudbury tactical guys have Para Ord 1911's. I was quite surprised when I saw one of them at work and took a look at what was in his holster. I'm told they are .40s.
