Pitting under grips

Hey guys,

I just picked up a nice French 1892 revolver. The gun had been greased for long term storage and is in very good condition, but it looks like moisture in the wood grips has caused significant rust. I scrubbed it with a bronze brush and oil.

No I am wondering what I should do to keep it from rusting and pitting further before I cover it all up with the grips.

Get it cleaned and hot blued

looks like red wine stains to me.

If you boil that portion in water, the rust will turn in to rust bluing. Oil/ grease it well and put the grips back on. It will be good for another few hundred years.
