Plains game cartridges

Brybenn, they will all work. Wildebeest can soak up some serious punishment though. A lot of the animals on your list I routinely shoot with the .300 wm, I find it very versatile for the variety of game we hunt. When I am one gun hunting I usually choose the .375, That way I am ready for anything. If you’re planning on visiting us at the show in Toronto we can talk about caliber until the cows come home.

You would do well with any of the original choices. You could easily go with a 270Win or any of the 7mm cartridges as both are more than capable of harvesting the animals you listed. I am amazed at how popular the 270Win and 8mm Mauser are across Africa. Most of the guides and rangers I encountered were carrying a 270.

Every plains game animal less a couple with a borrowed .30-06 I took was with .375 H&H. I like travelling with a single rifle and thus hunted couple big five I did with the .375 as well. If you’re definitely taking the .458 for buffalo, then a .270 thru .300 Win I’d go speedier on the PG rifle. But above all just choose a light rifle you shoot well, will feel good to set aside the .458 for the 7lb plains game rifle on a 35 degree day.

I'd go 375H&H even though the intended species are plains game...

Ya never know when a plains game hunt could turn into a dangerous game shoot to survive!

Enjoy!

Cheers
Jay

I have to agree with this type of thinking. There is no kill like over-kill.

270 win w/ 150-160 grain Partitions
6.5x55 SE w/ 156 grain Lapua Megas
35 Whelen w/ 225-250 grain Partitions

Magnums not required...

I would go .30-'06 as feedable anywhere also relatively easy to shoot and will knock over whatever you intend.

7x64 is also a classic. Relatively heavy for calibre bullets are good and to quote (or at least very closely paraphrase) a famous Maun based PH "Weatherby, nasty flinch in an expensive stock"

Scrummy
