So I have a savage 19r17 and have been shooting cci game points. My locale store now carries bulk Hornady vmax. I use this rifle for shooting small game and was curious to find out what the pros and cons of the plastic tip are. I am unfamiliar with this type of bullet. All the help is appreciated.

Hornady V-Max seem to be pretty good projectiles. The polymer tip is supposed to make it shoot flater trajectories and aid in expansion. I've loaded them in 223 Rem and they worked fine on the range for paper punching, my buddy took some small game hunting and they worked well enough for him.

I use them in my 22mag. Awesome lil bullet. Devastating on small game out to a 125 yards. Very accurate. I killed a jack rabbit at 225 paces. However the bullet did not expand. It was a long shot and I'm betting the bullet wasn't going to quick at that range. But overwise a great explosive bullet at 22mag velocitys. I also use them in my 2506. They make a mess of whatever they hit

The advantage is that you get the ballistic coefficient of a VLD/ FMJ but the expansion on game of an HP.
A standard HP is not very aerodynamic. The theory is that the plastic fills in the HP but disintegrates on impact with a target.
This way you get FMJ flight characteristics and HP impacts.
