EDIT: business opportunity?who would be the first to open an "civilian training range"?

I highly doubt any.gun club would allow these.to be discharged at someone....and since an ar can only.be shot at a range....

Looks just like "simunition" rounds the army uses. 5.56 NATO paint balls basically. Only thing is, the ones the army uses are so old that they not longer break on contact, just hurt like a son of a gun. It's a shame we can't use them though.

Given that its fairly quiet, uses non marker rounds and comes with a steel projectile trap I guess you could use it in your basement.

Would this be considered illegally discharging a firearm though

The simunition I used In the army was in a set of dedicated c7's and the simunition looked like a 9mm casing with a 9mm projectile to match

And after reading the link I believe these are significantly under powered compared to "traditional" simunition (1 gram projectile at only 375fps) I've seen guys whole thighs turn black and blue after a single hit from military simunition haha (they probably bruise a bit easier$ But trust me when you get hit, you do not want to get hit again.

Less pain = less fun. I've always wished a real simunition range would open up. It's like paintball x10.

EDIT- did a quick google. Sure enough there is 5.56 simunition. Tons of options to make an ar run simunition. I guess my unit had dedicated 9mm uppers opposed to the blot carrier switch

The whole point of simunition is that it does hurt! makes you want to avoid getting hit at all costs! which develops good instincts when it comes to a real bullet flying you way.

I know the purpose. Still hurts like a mofo. First time using it, I asked does it hurt, Got shot in the ass. Then asked, did it hurt?

Simmunition ammo has a rather short shelf life. Force on force training is one use of these types of ammo, it also allows you to conduct "live" training in places/structures/vehicles that cannot be safely templated.

The bigger question in my mind is: can I make those rounds work without the proprietary parts?

I get for a legal and safety standpoint the replacement bolt means you cannot chamber live ammunition. great.

But suppose one wanted to use these rounds in a non-AR platform .223 gun . . . .

Trained with simmunition in Defendo doing active shooter takedowns and so forth etc.
I gotta say, getting lit up at close range with those bad boys is something you remember!
Better than the real thing tho.....
That said I'd love to try those puppies out

Pointing a firearm at a person without lawful excuse is a criminal offence. What lawful excuse means, is up for interpretation.

As far as using simunition for training, in my opinion, the 5.56mm has some training value. The 9mm conversions are crap. I've found that force on force is less than ideal simply due to the amount of cumbersome safety equipment the participant needs to wear. Force on target is much more effective for honing drills especially in a close quarters environment. I will say that a few rounds of 5.56mm stings a bit through thin clothing or bare skin but the worst is catching burst from and LMG!

if a "simmunition" range is allowed for civilian use, maybe someone should look into setting one up? heck I would invest some cash if it's legally gtg. why only take classes shooting papers? I bet it would be fun as hell, not to mention it would be some real force on force training. paper don't shoot back as they say...
