Trying to understand what is what.

I see some just listed as 686 and some as 686-1 or 686-3

And

Are the performance centre worth 350 more than a standard 686

Thank you

S&W guys tend to be fixated on version codes. They explain what modifications have been made from the origional. In some cases, it's to fix a design issue. In others, it just denotes a slight change, such as a thinner or thicker front sight, etc.

In the case of the 686, some early models were akin to 1970's automobiles. The plant made them, and the local mechanics fixed them. Some of the origional Bangor Punta Corp guns had issues with barrel to cylinder misalignment, uneven forcing cones, hammer bushings failing, and an issue with the hand.

The Custom Shop guns are nice and worth the money if the mods are what you need. If you will be changing anything, you might as well buy a cheaper older model and build what you want.

There are quite a bit of different revison over the year, start with 686 and then become M-686 because of some minor issue and need modification. 686-3 is still use machined parts and hammer mounted fire pin for fast knocking timing. Not sure about 686-4, I have a 686-5 which made in year 2002, used some cast parts and flame mounted firepin. 686-6 start built in a internal lock and piss the armerican off. all different revison number was marked near the cylinder, you will found it when you open the cylinder. many old timer believe 686-3 is the best but I shot many different 686 and couldn't tell any. even the performance center gun has cast parts but still a nice smooth shooter. I might have mixed up some information but that is all about the fire pin location, machined parts VS casted parts and internal lock.
I suggest is go for a good used one and use the extra money buy one more other gun to give you more enjoyment.
