HI,
I am in the market for a 223 bolt action rifle and was thinking about getting the new Ruger American.
I want to know what people think about that gun that have actually fired one or own one?
how does it compare to the budget rifles put out by Savage and Remington?
It's priced a bit higher then the axis and 770remington but I realize just because you pay more
doesn't mean you're necessarily getting a better gun.
Maybe all 3 of the guns i mentioned are great and it all boils down to personal preference.
I'd be happy to hear any ones thoughts one these guns but primarily the Ruger American :)

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but you cannot buy a replacement stock for the Ruger American if you dont happen to like the cheap flimsy plastic one it comes with.
Boyds does sell stocks for the Savage.

good to know. i like having options to buy after market parts like better stocks and triggers.
who knows i might go with a completely different gun :p
I really havn't made up my mind what i want. im very indecisive when it comes to buying a new firearm.
i don't want to get something that in 6 months from time I buy it im on here trying to sell it :p hahaha

The Axis has been out for a few years. Expect Boyd's to have a threshold number, when Ruger has sold enough Americans the drop-in wooden stock will appear.

Meanwhile, look in the Hunting and Sporting forum for threads specifically about the Ruger American and "which budget/entry level rifle should I get?" and you'll find reports from people who are using the rifle already. Generally they are pleased with them. But try to get to at least handle one before you buy, no matter how many people speak well of a design, if it doesn't feel like it fits you, you probably won't shoot it as well as it can be shot, and you should try something else. Most of the rifles in this market segment are good, serviceable hunting guns, and very good value for money.

I did a lot of research just recently when trying to figure out what budget rifle I wanted to get into . The Ruger American I have no time with it, but apparently is the cream of the crop when it comes to the budget line of rifles because of its adjustable trigger out of the box. Both the internet and sales staff at my local gun shop said don't look or consider the 770 just because it’s not even close to being as smooth or nice feeling as the rest of the competition.

Now I personally grabbed a savage axis in 223 because the cost and the accuracy is better than what I will ever do (people regularly report moa groups with the 223) also the fact my local range only goes out to 300m. The pull on the trigger is stiff but has little to no take up and breaks clean (you can do a homemade trigger job to lighten it look it up on YouTube and even a timney adjustable trigger can be bought and some people modded in the savage accutrigger into it ). What you need to do is ask yourself what the need is. If it's for tack driving I personally say axis because for 420 to your door with a scope is a steal vs the American that is 450 and you would still need rings and glass.

If you planed on doing any major upgrades, match barrels really expensive triggers stock's .ect then you need to either flat out save for a better rifle or buy a budget rifle save for better glass and then save for a better rifle that can be upgraded I.E Remington 700, Savage 10 .ect That's my 2 cents.

P.s shot show news and savages web site now shows they will have a savage axis with the accutrigger! Word is on the internet it should run 40 USD more than the original?

not sure when it came available in the caliber but I saw it on the truth about guns site.
how do you like your Axis, lowe160? do you find it shoots just as good as $1,000 gun? is there a noticeable difference in the shooting?

I like the Axis as I only paid $300 new for it and it is a tack driver. I can't compare to a $1000 gun as I have never owned one, but it does shoot better than my A-bolt in 30.06!

That's a good price for a "tack driver" makes you feel good every time you pull the trigger..

I can't comment yet as far as firing. In my research and hands on dry fire, I would strongly consider the Ruger American for what it is. I was convinced enough I just bought one in .243 and .270 -the .223 may follow if I'm in the need of a bolt gun in .223. Several reviews out there, but drop by a dealer and get some hands on, low price but great features in the free float, trigger, bolt and weight categories =)

yes, it is hard to find a dealer around here that has this stuff in stock. and when they do it sells right away. I have been looking also at the Mossberg mvp .223 it takes AR mags and looks pretty sweet. the review videos on youtube for it seem to be alright. not a lot of videos out there showing the groups that these budget rifle get, there is a few tho and from what ive seen they all seem to very and or get the same type grouping. but, a lot of that depends on the shooter too, how you breath and how steady you are I guess.
I mostly shoot shotguns :) the rifles are fairly new to me in this hobby.

I have owned a Savage and Axis in 223. I currently own a Remington Varmint in 223 - and that heavy gem, is a tack driver in every sense of the word. The Savages and Axis, well, were good shooters, but the mags, well, lets say i had issues and sold them both. The other keep for me is my Vanguard S2. It is a litle picky with the ammo, but the gophers cannot tell the difference.
