i was thinking of using sabots and 40 cal bullet and say 20-25 grs of unique. this will be just for plinking and goofing around at the pit. also i would like to be able to shoot say 100 rounds without busting my shoulder. opinions please.

You could try that, or for less than half the price of the 40 cal bullet and sabot, you could buy some light 45 cal cast bullets to use with your Unique.

The sabots seam unnecessary unless you are looking for stupidly high velocity like the accelerators. Unless a pile of 40 cal bullets has been dropped on your doorstep I can't see a reason for the endeavour with the cheap and plentiful 45 cal pistol bullets available.

There doesn't need to be "a reason".

It would be an interesting project. No reason you couldn't do it as long as you find or make the appropriate sabots. 30 cal rifle bullets would be very interesting.

You have that much unique that you can waste it like that? Lucky guy! I'd be using something else (trail boss maybe) and saving my unique for reloading for my revolvers

first off you can't use 45 cal pistol bullets. too small. they are .451" or.452" and the rifle calibre is .458". as far as the powder goes i have from higginson powders what they called infallible-similar to unique. this was a bulk powder and i have 9 pounds. as for unique i have alot of it but will be using bullseye and win 231 for my pistols. not a fan of unique in pistol loads. bought infallible and unique strictly for cast bullet rifle loads. it works real good for what i want.
