Hello all
Well a nice tikka came to me in 270wsm and I know knothing about mags or this cartage and still in the fence weather I will keep it
I usually use my 30-06 6.5 or 7mm-08 and 35W as a go to
My friend drops anything from elk to Rams with it so that's what peked my interest in it
Can anybody rcomend a good factory ammo and weight for Alberta white tail ? to get me started
And of course any feed back on the cartage as to its range ? Bullet weight and just general what I've shot with my 270wsm

Thanks

My hunting partner uses the 270wsm in a T3 for everything with 150gr ammo.

I did some research in preparation for handloading for it.

It is one of the "unsung" long range calibers and performs well with, like everything, the right bullet choice.

Mono metals are his current choice.

Because of the steep shoulder some have issues with feeding, his T3 doesn't.

Google 270wsm and you will have a plethora of information to read.

I have a T-3 in 270 WSM as well, and I've been shooting mono bullets, 130 gr Barnes TSX to be exact. You can get roughly 200 - 250 fps more than the 270 Winchester, so it does make for a nice longer ranger deer rifle. The biggest animal I've shot with mine is a 5X6 elk, and it was a pass through, one shot kill at about 225 yards or so. I've shot several deer with it as well, and you'd probably find it similar to a 7mm Rem Mag in application.

I've had my savage 270wsm for 10 years or more for whitetails. I use 150gr Winchester ballistic silvertips with great success. I will keep using this calibre as long as my shoulder can take it. Only issue is factory ammo is a little pricey and sometimes hard to find if your as anal as I am about what you use. This year I had to drive an hour and a half as SAIL was only place with 150gr in stock.

It's my go-to for deer, but I have killed a moose and an elk with it as well. I use 140 grain Barnes TSX. Only recovered the bullets from the moose. Perfect performance. The moose stood up from his bed, took the hit, and laid back down. Didn't take a step.

It shoots fast and flat and hits hard. The TSX bullet punches above its weight class too. More like a 160 grain typically constructed bullet

150 Berger VLD factory HSM. It depends if you're rifle likes these. Two of my hunting partners shoot them also. We have shot elk from 80 to 450 yds. I am a Barnes and Nosler shooter but the Bergers have impressed me! All one shot kills. These chrony at 3050 fps out of my M70. If I was going to load for it I would run a 140 Accubond.

For a few factory boxes I used the Winchester 140gr accubonds. In my T3 it was reading more like 3150 instead of the 3250fps on the box.

I picked up some 140gr accubonds for reloading. I have yet to work on loads yet. The 270wsm is a great round, just picked mine up this year as my full time deer and one of my moose guns.

I've owned my 270wsm for about 8 years now. 130 gr Remington Core-Lokt were the most consistent factory ammo, but this caliber seems to really shine with hand loaded cartridges. Every gun is different, but I found that 130gr were more consistent than 150 gr. I have also loaded 90 gr Sierra HP for coyotes, but at longer distances the 130gr are again, more consistent.
If you decide that you'd like to give hand loading some rounds, I have a few recipes that you may want to try.

Good luck, its a great round!!

Nice gun if you hand load, not so much if you just do factory ammo, hard to find and expensive. Even Brass is rare, Short mags are not calibers with a future. Mine doesn't like bullets over 140 grn. either. Doene a deer and a wolf with it, neither complained. :)

My 270 WSM loves the 140 Accubond over a healthy dose of Winchester MRP powder, factory Winchester 150gr PP also shot well but I have only taken game with the Nosler and so far two deer have fallen, no bullets recovered. The 270WSM is a great flat shooting hard hitting round that loves open spaces and long distances.

Guess it depends where you are in regards ammo availability.

My local Canadian Tire always has several brands to choose from. But as one mentioned, some can be expensive. Friend of mine recently purchased a box of 270 WSM Nosler Trophy Grade 150 gr. Accubonds for $89.99!

We hunt together and have witnessed the efficiency of this round, especially at 300-500 yards distances. Impressive.
