So need help.
I believe a 1893 marlin chambered in 32 W Special
But I am confused by the 18 inch barrel.

Thoughts?
Cut or were they made at that length?

According to the Marlin Firearms book by Lt.Col.Williams Brophy they made a special lightweight with 18 or 20 barrel,short forearm and short magazine. I think any combination was possible if special order like Winchester.
 
If it's an 1889, then the caliber would have to be 32-20, not 32 Win. Sp. If it's indeed 32 win sp., then it's not an 1889 and it's a 1893.

Any more pics. The easiest way to tell an 1889, is the little spring loaded lever locking nub behind the lever on the bottom of the buttstock wrist. Does it have that?
 
Looked up in the Marlin book last night. The 1889's didn't come with that length of barrel. It could have been a request, but that would have to be determined by getting an authentication letter from the Cody Museum. From that picture, it seems to have had the wood refinished. Looks like the metal at the tang is proud of the wrist wood on the butt stock. It also looks way too nice for that age of rifle. It is also much nicer than the metal wear, which is another good indication of refinishing. It could have had a poor bore at the muzzle end and had the barrel and mag. tube chopped and the 2 required dovetails for the front sight and mag tube hanger re-cut. An easy job for any gunsmith.
