dont throw it out, post some pics. If its like an AK/VZ mag then there may be a tab in the middle of the floorplate that needs to be depressed before you can slide the floorplate off. You may need to drill the rivet out to remove the follower, then install a new one when you put it back together
 
there not like the AK's, they have some stupid plate on the bottom that it ried prying off but didnt wanna screw it up so i stopped my prying techniques and left it alone!
 
The Tapco mags can be disassembled rather easily for cleaning and maintenance should you like to play rough with your SKS.

I'm not advising you follow this method as you may break your Mag, but this is what i've done.

1- Down at the bottom of the mag there are two metal flaps that wrap up and around a plastic lip at the bottom. Take a pointed pick (something like an ice pick) and press it down in between the outermost part of the lip, and the vertical part of the flap - effectively what you'll do is compress the plastic part inward
2-after jamming the pick down side of it (you may have to use a hammer to get it in) take another flat head screw driver and insert it into the mag onto of the steel bottom plate. twist the screw driver and the side with the pick jammed into it should pop open.
3- once the one side is open, simply work the bottom plate back and forth and the other side will come off as well.

They are very tough glass filled nylon Mags - you can bend them and they wont break.

Once the mag is opened, just clean all the crud out, make sure the follower channel is clean, spay a little oil on the follower spring, and re assemble.

re-assembly is super easy, the bottom plate will slide on, and snap into place (you'll see what i mean when you get to this point).

thanks , but i dont think hammer and ice pic are the best way to do this.
i know that i must depress the spring but there is non way to reach it.
i will post pic tonight from home,i usually dont bring mag to the office.:D
 
What i have done to mine is:

between the ''tapco'' and ''usa'' I drill a small hole, and with a small allen key i push on the button that is hide under the cover... and slide the cover (under the cover, the plate is working the same as an ak or VZ mag)

hope this help, with this mod done, I can open the mag easily.
 
Drill a small hole in the bottom of the base plate.
I just used an old knife, twisted it back and forth for 3 minutes and i was through (the polymer flakes off quite easily)
then use a small rod (allen key) to depress the button and slide it off.

I am "thinking" of doing this to my mag, but would it legal? Does this fall under "altering" of any mag as set out in the "rules"
 
extending mag capacities?...yes very illegal...our legal mag cap here in canada is 5rds for this caliber...dont mod the mag for higher capacities...i was joking around...tho it is rediculously easy to do on the tapco mag...muahaha

but seriously....this is my serious face now :cool: dont f with the mag. (unless its to clean it)
 
I recently picked up 3 of these mags. After watching a youtube video on "disassemble tapco mag sks" (google it) I just drilled through the bottom, depressed the tab, and voila, just as another member instructed a few posts back. My question: once you have drilled a hole in the bottom, is the mag still legal? It's still set for a 5 round capacity, but with a hole in the bottom is it possible some overzealous CO might give me a hard time?

I knew when I did this it might become a paper weight, but I had to do it. For science.

its still legal as you didnt change the capacity or modify the internals... if they question you simply pack 5 rounds in it and prove to them that it is a regular magazine...there is nothing illegal about haveing holes in our magazines...

scientifically the hole is there for condensate Vapourization control!
 
Nothing wrong with disassembling mags for cleaning or repair. Just don't increase the capacity and you'll be fine.
