Hey guys,

I need some info and help with the value of this French revolver. My Grandfather bought it years ago and it's been in the safe ever since.
From what I can find on google it seems to be a French M1854 Lefaucheux Cavalry Model 12mm Pinfire.

I found one that looks the same and it's from the American civil war http://www.ima-usa.com/original-u-s-civil-war-french-m1854-lefaucheux-cavalry-model-12mm-pinfire-revolver-serial-number-34003.html

How do I tell for sure what calibre it's in and if it's safe to shoot? Can you even get ammo for these?
How do I find the year or any other useful info about it.
How much is it worth?

I can take more detailed pictures if needed.
Any information is really helpful thanks in advance!

An empty tin of pinfire ammo sells for between $50 and $100 (USD) online. I think all other questions aside, that's a memento pistol not a shooter.
