Please help me identify this shotgun

Is there a groove in the top of the receiver ring?
Remington built shot guns on the No 1 action c1875-90.

Rolling block actions were really popular for this sort of gun in some of the Scandinavian countries. Lots converted from military surplus guns, lots more made from new as shotguns and various rifle calibers. Carl Gustav and Husquvarna both made lots.

Any roll marks on the tang, top or bottom? Remington usually marked theirs there, if nowhere else, and they made and sold actions in bulk as well, from what I have read.

What did you have in mind for it? It looks to be in pretty good nick, as far as the general condition goes. Better than a lot, in any case. Would like as not hold up quite well as a 38-55 or 45-70, at BP pressures, with a new barrel. Some new wooden ware might be an idea if you wanted, too.

Cheers

Thanks guys. Yes there is a groove in the top of the receiver. Kind of rolls inward like a "ditch". Would that make this a number 1?. My understanding is that remington made a version as a shotgun from the ground up, and made a version into a shotgun from a converted military rifle. Either way, this a neat piece of history here. Never seen one of these before

I believe this is a Remington Rolling block shotgun made in the states as a shot gun, not a conversion. They show up occasionally and are kinda cool. I like the look of yours. If you want to shoot it but leave it as is, you can epoxy a liner in it and chamber it. You would need to make a sleeve for the chamber and the muzzle so the liner fits tight at both ends. TJ makes a great liner and sell it by the inch. You can add a front sight and tap the tang for a sight then you are set for BPCR but with a cool looking rifle. These are much more elegant actions than the clunkier military actions that have been converted. Something like a 38-55 in a faster twist say 1:13 or 14 works very nice.

I believe this one was actually a converted military rifle. When i removed the handguard, there was a rear sight dovetail cut into the bottom of the barrel which I believe is how they "hid" the cuts when they converted them to shotgun. Either way, its a cool piece
