Please help, new BAR all over the place.

Fudge, no, this one's good to go now, and dialed in properly. My scope installation was maybe a 50yd rifle, but now that the scope is installed properly it may as well be a bolt action.

Excellent - good to hear its performing so well.
Good follow up, will be informative for the next user who might encounter similar issues.
Best,

Right on Petamocto,...glad you got it straightend out. I had my Shorttrac 7-08 to the range the other day and had excellent results with the new Leupold and 150gr blue box Federal,..I was very pleased to say the least. I think these guns are just as accurate as most bolt actions if they are set up properly, and with the right ammunition.

I had similar problems with my 270 BAR. Early 90's. Changed rings & bases, lapped the rings. Started loading my own for it and dropped to 130gr Flat Base. Once I found a hand load that shot okish, I started from 35 in/lbs and worked up. IIRC, I have the forearm nut torqued to about 45 in/lbs. Had to use a little crows foot on a torque wrench. My rifle also hates hates hates being dirty, so that was a long day at the range. It was pretty much shoot a 2-3 groups and clean rifle, but at the end of the day it shot a better okish. I always have 1 flyer out of a 3 shot group, but at least I feel confident enough to take it out hunting again. Whether or not I do this, I'm not sure considering my rifle collection has grown significantly in the last few years.

Clean the gun and gas bits more often that a bolt, and don't load it up with grease or heavy oil.

Update: The BAR is now officially squared away, and all it took was someone who knew what they were doing to put the scope on properly.

Unfortunately, in the 200 or so rounds I have put through it in order to get it to this point, I am not even sure if I want to keep it anymore, because I just bought two crates of the 5.56/223 on sale, so now I don't think I'll get much use out of this now that I've got my R-PAL and I'll be getting a Daniel Defence AR soon.

I'm not entirely sure I want to sell it; I just don't think I'll get that much use out of it now that I've got $2k invested in it with the Leupold VX3.

I'd keep it if money wasn't an issue and I did more hunting, but I just don't have that much fun shooting it. Le sigh.

I think the whole ordeal has left a bad taste in your mouth. Too bad. I'm saving up for a short action Shortrax and will be topping it with a Leupold. Good luck with your new guns.

I'll almost guarantee that the problem your accuracy woes are directly connected to lack of vibration dampening between the barrel and forearm. A proper application of automotive silicone in the area just where the barrel tapers down from the chamber to about 4" ahead of that point should help a fair bit to tame the harmonic "twang" from the tube and give way better results accuracy wise. I have proven results using this method over the years on M1 carbines and the like and it works beauty.I would like to work with one of these puppies to extract optimum results for given chamberings. No big deal fer sure, fair dinkum.:)

I'm going to assume that you oil the barrel where the silicon goes so it doesn't stick there and assemble when still wet to take shape. Silicone sticks to the wood and remains there as a pad. If not, please explain the procedure. How thick of a bead? I have an M1 Carbine to try this on.
