Friends ask me to go hunting. They are not really hunters also, just got licences and going for small game.
I am not sure if it is for me but I should try and at least will get some fresh air. I do not want to spend much money for the good hunting shotgun but on the other site it should be somehow good if I will decide to continue.
I will start with small game and probably move forward. It means I need some kind of general shotgun for the beginners. Should it be with different chokes for different types of hunting? Was reading many threads, but could not get the answer. I do have Winchester 1300 defender, but i think it can not be the case
Liked reviews about Baikal 153. Please advise
Thanks

The Remington 870 is a good starting shotgun in my opinion.Used ones are not too expensive and you can get them with choke tubes for different game.

By small game, do you mean squirrels, rabbits, grouse? If so, a 20 ga. is more than enough. Especially if you haven't done any shotgunning before and will be shooting stationary animals.

870 express 20 or 12 guage 3 in . get 28 in barrel with choke tubes . will be a gun for life . then if you want too use for deer . get extra barrel for slugs . or just buy a combo kit . good luck

Guys,

can you please be more specific on the models. There are several models of 870 express or Mossberg 500/590.
Thanks

The variations of models are often only aesthetic changes.

What you need for small game is 20 gauge, smoothbore 28-30 " barrel, pump action Rem 870/moss 500. Stick with the regular express model.

The 870 I have is just called the 870 express w 30" barrel in 12 gauge. Same thing in a 20 would be fine.

if youre not sure if its your thing, and you may end up just going once or twice, its probably not a good idea to spend too much money on it.

its hard to beat the value of a 12 gauge Maverick for $219 from cabelas:

or for about another $80 you can pick up the Mossberg 500 field in 12 or 20 gauge, with wood stocks.

the Remington 870 20 gauge youth models are especially light, compacy and handy but youll be shelling out about $380 for them.
i love mine, its become my favorite walking small game gun:

i wouldnt really spend more than this on something that you may end up not being interested in. generally the more you spend on a shotgun, the more money youll lose if you change your mind and decide to sell it.

theres a maverick 88 in the EE right now for $200 shipped:

and a mossberg 500 20 gauge for $225 shipped (great price):

I do have Winchester 1300 defender

wait - why dont you just use this?

ok its not ideal, but many people have used their HD type guns for small game.
the IC choke actually isnt bad: with most small game that you intend to eat, at closer ranges, you generally dont want too tight a pattern.

not sure if these came with long mag plugs - my Mossberg Persuader didnt. if it doesnt, you can easily fabricate a magazine plug for it that will limit the magazine to 2 rounds. i used a long delrin rod in my Persuader that i cut to size, the mag spring rode over it and i didnt have any problems with binding at all. in a pinch you could use a wooden dowel.
really with the mag plugged, you have a standard 12 gauge that weighs a couple ounces more and has a fixed IC choke. not the end of the world.

then if you actually LIKE hunting - which you probably will - you can take the time to find a gun that is ideally suited for your intended use.
